Training in Utrecht

It has been a great month in Utrecht, and this city is great for training. I am very lucky to live both close to the city center and close to nature. The early morning runs are one of my favorites, rising with the sun and enjoying the peaceful and quiet mornings with beautiful views and fresh air. If you don't have the habit yet to train before work, I would say try it!
Also, the dutch dikes are great for training. Riding on winding dikes with endless water on one side and the flat and green countryside on the other side. Maybe I should stay a bit longer in The Netherlands?!
Thesis 28 November

After 4 years full of wonderful moments I will finish my PhD about esophageal cancer surgery. I set a date, and I will be defending it at the University of Utrecht on November 28th. There is a lot of work to do in the next couple of months, but it's very exciting and I am very happy to finish this. Work work work!!
Half marathon Utrecht

Utrecht is a city with a special place in my heart. It's the city where I studied and made a lot of memories. Participating in the half marathon this month was a great way for me to show pride to my city, ‘mn stadsie’. Running through quite a few streets in my student neighborhood reminded me of everything I’ve been through and what I’ve accomplished since those years. I ran myself into second place and set a new personal best in 1.22.51.
Middle Distance Challenge Heilbronn

A week after the half marathon in Utrecht I lined up at Challenge Heilbronn for the Middle Distance triathlon. Together with my parents I left to Germany. Not an easy race, the water was freezing cold and the bike course was very hilly. Tough but epic with amazing views! Also there were many spectators along the run course and the atmosphere was great in this nice little town. Put this event in your schedule next year! I gave what I had and came home with a second place.
Ironman Maastricht

Unfortunately we have been to court on May 14th for formal proceedings against both Ironman and the Dutch Triathlon Federation. After months of many attempts, both organizations were not willing to reverse the disqualification and to appoint me as the winner of Ironman Maastricht 2018 again. We wait for the outcome till Wednesday 29th and I will come back to this in more detail later on.
NOS Langs de Lijn

On May 21st I have been guest in the radio show NOS Langs de Lijn, NPO radio 1. During this interview we spoke about different topics. We highlighted the shipwreck I survived in Indonesia and how this experience changed my life from doctor to triathlete. It was a special evening. Here you can listen to the show
New design

It's still not even 3 years ago that I raced my first little sprint triathlon and since then so much has changed! Every day I learn more about the sport, and I am very grateful that I found partners who support my journey. In the last months I have been busy with the help of others to improve my website, and to design a personal logo and racesuit. I am very excited to announce that my new website will be launched in the beginning of June and that I can share and show photos of my logo and racesuit soon. Stay tuned for this!
Next race

I am heading to Cairns, Australia on May 30th to race my first Ironman of the year! The race will take place on June 9th.
