Unearthed Sydney results are in

Last weekend at Fishburners over 100 innovators in 20 teams built prototype innovations to four challenges from South32, Newcrest, and the NSW Government.

Teams got together on Friday night and had 54 hours to produce their prototype solution using the data provided, with mentoring support from South32, Newcrest, the NSW Dept of Industry, Amazon Web Services, acQuire Technologies and other members of the Australian startup community. Final pitches were full of passion and enthusiasm, and it was very difficult for the judges to determine the winners, but here they are...

The Winners

1st Prize: Data Cake
Team: Anthony So, Corinna Mittmann, Tracy Keys, William So, Young Wang.
Prototype: They developed a predicitive algorithm for alumina recovery.
Challenge: South32 - Maximise alumina plant production through analysis of thousands of production plant data channels

2nd Prize (shared): Perry's Fan Club & Goldmembers
PFC Team: Anthony So, Corinna Mittmann, Tracy Keys, William So & Young Wang.
Prototype: They developed a predicitive algorithm for alumina recovery.
Challenge: South32 - Maximise alumina plant production through analysis of thousands of production plant data channels
Gold Members Team: Callum Webb, Gaurav Singh, Pamela Ameglio, & Rob Miller
Prototype: A prevention system based on data analytics with a focus on equipment use & imbalances that predicts upcoming surge events
Challenge: Newcrest - Predicting or preventing SAG mill surge events through big data analysis
Young Innovator Award: Team Beaver
Team: Anthony Lee, Bicky Shrestha, Erin Joly, Sereen Yaseen, Tyson Keen, Zac Peters
Prototype: Using an understanding of engineering principles, this team developed a machine learning algorithm to determine variables of interest which would have an influence over the internal behavior of the SAG mill. Their modelling techniques resulted in a 99% prediction rate based on data made available.
Challenge: Newcrest - Predicting or preventing SAG mill surge events through big data analysis
People's Choice Award: 10 Hour Flight
This team flew in all the way from South Korea to take part in Unearthed Sydney!

“Unearthed offers an opportunity for innovative minds to apply their skills to developing solutions to real and current issues in the resources industry. The Hackathon challenges participants to develop more efficient, effective, safer and smarter ways to work, the key attributes which allow NSW industry to continue to innovate and maintain a competitive edge.”    Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy, Anthony Roberts

Don't stress, there's another Hackathon this weekend...

Unearthed Hunter Valley

And there's still a few tickets left so be quick!
