St David's Minister's Missive

Dear St David's Church Family💒

Some good news we have received this week is that we are allowed to sing again in church! We do have to wear masks if we sing but we can take them off in between. As ever, if you are more comfortable to leave your mask on for the whole service, you are welcome to do so.

This Sunday 28th February is the 2nd Sunday in Lent. Please find the liturgy attached. Lent is a time where we journey with Jesus on his road to the cross. It is also a time for stopping and reassessing our lives in light of the good news of Jesus.

Lent 2 Yr B 28th February 2021

We are delighted to welcome Milton and Ron, who will be leading our singing, along with our music team back in force! We look forward to seeing Kim again next week.

Here are the things that I would like to pass on to you this week:

Lent devotional ideas: Please see last week's missive for information on Lent Event and the Common Grace Lent series. There are also Lent reflection booklets at the back of the church.

I'd also like to recommend Kate Bowler (who I mentioned in the sermon last Sunday). She has a book called 'Everything Happens for a reason and other lies I have loved'. She has a podcast: https://katebowler.com/podcasts/

Everything HappensA Podcast with Kate Bowler Life isn’t always bright and shiny, as Kate Bowler knows. Kate is a young mother, writer and professor who, at age 35, was suddenly diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. In warm, insightful, often funny conversations, Kate talks with people about what they’ve learned in dark times. Subscribe Apple Podcasts NPR […]

And I am finding her Lent short videos on Instagram very powerful:

Thank you to all those who helped make our church BBQ last Sunday a fabulous community event.

Membership - we were delighted to formally welcome Roger, Chris, Prue and Chris into membership last Sunday. We have 2 other people who are interested in becoming members. If you would like to become a member of St David's or would like some more information, please let me know.

Special Religious Education (SRE) started again for the year this week. Every Tuesday morning Brian and I have a class of 18, year fives and it was lovely to meet them all. Please pray for this mission of our church as we introduce them to wondering about the biblical stories through Godly Play.

Stations of the Cross Art Exhibition is on at Northmead Uniting Church 30th March - 12 April (postponed in 2020). A few of us from our morning prayer service are planning on going together on Wednesday 31st March (tbc) at about 11.30am. Please let me know if you would like to join us.

World Day of Prayer is taking place at St David's at 11am on Friday 5th March. We will be welcoming people from the different churches in Haberfield. All are welcome. If you can help with providing something for morning tea and/or be there on the day to support, that would be great.

6th March 9.30-12 - pre-wedding working bee in the church building and hall kitchen.

Morning Tea can now include sandwiches and cakes. We are looking for a few helpers for morning tea. If you can assist, please have a chat with Gloria. This Sunday Gloria is away and has kindly left us some cakes in the freezer. We need a couple of people to assist this Sunday particularly.

Wednesday night Bible Study Group happens each week. If you would like to be part of this, please have a chat with David.

Morning Prayer and Communion Service - 9.30am every Wednesday. A quiet space in the middle of the week to be still, pray, meditate to Taize music, discuss the gospel reading, followed by a cuppa at Garnish. All are welcome.

Story-time - Hello to our St David's kids! Dominic, Matilda, Harry, Frank, Sophie, Edie, Ella, Aiden, River, Sacha, Eli and Elise. Our story this week is called A Friend for Little Bear by Harry Horse and Graham will be reading that for us. We look forward to seeing you on the story mat (either in person or via computer)😊

This week's photos include: Church BBQ; Lent reflection cards; meeting with local Revs - Catholic, Anglican, Baptist and me! Very lovely to have another female in the group. Lisa is a pastor at the Baptist church; this week's story book.

This week's prayer is by our UCA President, Deidre Palmer:

Compassionate Christ, You speak to our deepest longings for love, hope and meaning. You call us into communion with you. Draw close to us, as we take time in this season, to pray, to reflect,

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, whether physically or via our live-stream.

Wherever you are and whoever you are, you are welcome in this place.

May God's light shine in us and through us🌟

With love, hope and peace

Joy💒
