Love Notes

A few words from our pastor

My month-long leave came to a close on June 30th and I’m eager to rejoin all of you on this wonderful journey we have taken up together. I’m grateful to Rev. Elizabeth Vincent for assuming Sunday responsibilities in June and for doing this so ably; I’m grateful too for a congregation that inspired her with your openness, compassion, and warmth. Thanks also to Pat Riddell for taking on added responsibilities while I was away—and for doing so with quiet grace.

This was my first significant surgery and so there were all sorts of important surprises and lessons along the way. One lesson of significance centered around my discovery that when I am busy, I miss much of my own life. Even Jesus needed downtime, not simply to catch his breath but to quiet his mind so that he could return with fresh eyes and a renewed spirit to a world in considerable need. That even God would need to rest on the seventh day of creation now moves me in ways I missed before.

Unless there is a surprise lurking in the shadows, this particular medical journey is behind me and I’ll be in to other things. I hope and pray that I don’t develop selective amnesia and forget what June taught me. And not just for my sake but because I think these insights will help me serve each of you in fuller, richer ways. That is certainly my prayer!

I look forward to seeing your faces again and discovering together how and where the Spirit is leading!

With you on the journey,

Be the Church, wherever you are
working for the common good of the whole
as faithful followers of Christ
in community with one another and others.

Worship With Us This Sunday

Community Spirit UCC gathers each Sunday morning for an online worship service via Zoom. Log in between 10:15 and 10:25 AM. Worship begins at 10:30 AM.

All you need is a phone or a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone AND a weekly email invitation from Pastor Karen with the link to follow. (Reach out to her at if you're not receiving these invitations.)

Please check your email inbox on Saturday to make sure you’ve received your worship link for worship the following day. This will give you time to be in touch with Pat if you need help. If you’re running late on Sunday morning and run into trouble, please reach out to a fellow church member who may be able to forward their Zoom link or help you troubleshoot.

In the Virtual Pulpit This Sunday

We’re in for a treat in worship this week as Zack Vincent takes the virtual pulpit before he leaves for Scotland to begin his university studies—and an adventure of a lifetime. Those who know Zack know he possesses a keen mind, an expansive heart, and an openness to life—and that he’s wise beyond his years. This is a Sunday you won’t want to miss!

All-Church Picnic on July 14th!

You are invited to an all-church potluck on Wednesday, July 14th at 5:30 PM. We have reserved the pavilion at Riverbottom Park.  Setup will begin at 5:00 PM, so if you can come early and lend a hand, it will be appreciated.

Everyone should bring their own folding chair (if possible, bring extras for other people), their own table setting, and a potluck dish or dessert to share. Iced tea and lemonade will be provided.

This is our first post-pandemic opportunity to come together as a faith community and share our experiences of the past year. We will follow current COVID regulations, so if you are not fully vaccinated, please wear a mask to protect yourself as well as others. We will also have a signup sheet for everyone in attendance for purposes of contact tracing.

It will be great to see everyone! If you have any questions, be in touch with Mary Loncar or Joan Dilts

The UCC’s 33rd General Synod—July 11-18

Just as our congregation assembles periodically to make decisions, just as the Western Association gathers from time to time, just as the Rocky Mountain Conference holds Annual Celebrations to tend to matters of consequence, so the United Church of Christ comes together every other year to seek the Spirit’s wisdom and leading in matters of practical, social, and theological consequence.

In keeping with our denomination’s unique way of governing, proclamations and position statements affirmed at General Synod are made “to the church, not for the church.” In other words, it falls to each congregation to embrace (or reject) actions taken at General Synod. As an example, in 2005 when delegates at General Synod affirmed same-sex marriage, UCC churches across the nation were free to celebrate this decision or disagree with it; none were expected to rubber stamp it. This was in keeping with our distinctive form of covenantal polity.

Pastor Karen is a delegate to this year’s General Synod, as well as the next one in two years. While there is no travel involved because of the pandemic, her schedule the week of July 11th will reflect her role as Synod delegate. If she is slow to respond to an email or a voice message, it’s because she’s taken up fulfilling her responsibilities as a representative of the UCC churches on the Western Slope. Be assured that she will tend to your needs as promptly as possible!

Wholeness & Wellness Weekend at LaForet

August 27-29, 2021

A quiet space, a settled body, and a calm mind allow room for what is important in life to float to the surface.

Make time to connect to nature, your body, your deep self, and community. Storytelling, yoga, mindfulness, hiking, nutrition, creative expression, connection to nature, and even massage will all be options in this retreat designed for your refreshment and re-centering. Offering hosts in each area will provide you many choices of experiences to help restore your wholeness and wellness.

Open to everyone; this is an intentionally diverse, innovative event, aiming to engage people of all religions or none, of every background and path. All are welcome. To deepen into the genuine culture of welcome, Wholeness & Wellness Weekend will engage a post-colonial potluck approach, meaning that the experience is richer when everyone has something to bring, and the structure and role of leadership and participants will be less traditional and top-down, and more communal. Rather than a keynote or main event, our hosts and participants will honor one-another's offerings and expertise.

In light of nature playing an essential role in human wellness and spiritual wholeness, we will also aim to spend abundant time outdoors, and also make this event as green and sustainable as we can reasonably achieve. At times, we may ask for those who are able to embrace the rustic and the re-usable, always with participants’ comfort in mind.

Happy 4th of July!
