SUSTAINABILITY NEWSLETTER  |  ISSUE 1.0

"Our sustainability mission is to make a positive and profitable contribution toward a sustainable future by integrating green building practices into all aspects of our business.

The benefits of operating and maintaining high-performing buildings extend well beyond environmental, economic, and social impacts. For Parkway, improving the sustainability of our portfolio offers direct value to our customers, our investors and improves our overall competitiveness in the marketplace. Sustainable operations simply make good business sense.

It is our hope that as we look toward the future, sustainable, healthy, and profitable buildings are the norm and not the exception."

LEED VOLUME PROGRAM:
A STREAMLINED APPROACH

Parkway has enrolled 25 buildings in the US Green Building Council’s LEED Volume program. “The LEED certification process will be streamlined, easier and a lot more cost effective for Parkway, and it also means we can pursue many LEED certifications simultaneously.” Says Jeff Dunbar, Parkway’s Sustainability Director

Most of the 25 buildings targeted for the PKY LEED Volume program are marquee properties in high-growth markets across the Sun Belt. Fifteen of these existing buildings will be going through the LEED certification process for the first time. The other ten buildings have already earned LEED certification once before and will now pursue mandatory recertifications every five years under the LEED Volume program.

Jeff will be speaking at the 2014 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in New Orleans this October about Parkway's volume program. Stay tuned for highlights of the event!

BENCHMARKING PERFORMANCE DATA

Parkway Properties is a proud ULI Greenprint Center for Building Performance Member and we are excited to have been part of their Greenprint Performance Report: Volume 5. As the largest global collection of transparent, verifiable, and comprehensive data about the environmental performance of buildings, this report provides aggregate benchmarks and performance trends for the real estate industry.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
CAL/EPA

Cal/EPA is the headquarter for the Environmental Protection Agency.  The building was the first property in the world to receive LEED  EBOM Platinum certification under the LEED EB Pilot program in 2004.  Cal/EPA recently submitted its LEED Recertification Documentation for the second time. With their recent effort, Cal/EPA aims to maintain their impressive LEED Platinum designation for another five years. In addition to Cal/EPA, ten additional PKY properties are also actively pursuing formal LEED EB recertification between now and 2015.

Cal/EPA Project Highlights
The building has a 100 Energy Star Score and it saves over $1.4 million annually in operating expenses.  Cal/EPA's sustainability features include: Solar Panels, Energy efficient LED lighting, 150 secured and monitored bike spaces with showers and locker room access, Native and Drought Resistant Landscaping, Daytime cleaning, Ultra low-flow urinals and High-efficiency HVAC fans and filters
* CalEPA is a third party owned asset managed by Parkway.
TENANT EVENTS:
EARTH DAY
Hosting Earth Day events has become standard practice for many Parkway properties. As we get more tenants on board with our sustainability initiatives, these events have become a celebration of what the properties have done to drive sustainability.  Several properties extend the Earth Day celebration into the week by holding electronic waste (e-waste) drives, transportation fairs, and other tenant and community engagement events.

Read more about our tenant engagement programs on Page 38 of Parkway's Sustainability Report.
