President's Pen

26th June 2014
Welcome to our newsletter,
"The Pride"

If you have something to announce to the Club via this format, contact Reynolds Graphics.

A home game this week allowed the club members to see many of our senior teams play on turf. It was a wet and wooly day but the faithful hung in there to watch the games. It was great to see our Mayor Russell Aubrey and his wife Glenys along with many of our sponsors and life members join us on the side lines. After the games the dress of the day was something to do with Soccer in honour of the World Cup being held in Brazil. It was great to see so many members get into the spirit of the night. Including our Mayor and a couple of our favourite ring ins from the bowls club wearing their favourite soccer club colours.

Our Premier 1 Men won very convincingly and it was good to see. CTPs played against Aquinas last week and lost a 4 - 3 game. Our Melville boys won 4 - 0 and looked the better team all night against CTP. The players, coaches and managers should be congratulated on a fine performance. It was also well appreciated by all for the kind words from the Mayor in the change rooms after the game. This set the tone for the night with the Melville Men's Seniors winning throughout the evening. Well done to Dan McEntee for reaching his 400 game mark.

Our Premier 1 Women while starting slow against YM in some real poor conditions continued their relentless style to win very convincingly in the end. This achievement was further augmented for the team because we had 5 of our senior elite and stalwart players out due to AIS and Personal Duties or injuries. The depth of our young players is enormous and great to see. I understand that 6 goals were scored by 6 separate players. Think about that?

A foot note. All reports after some pretty big down pours of rain is that there was no time lost on the field and the new turf drained very efficiently and was in tip top condition very soon after the rains. The only sad item to report is that over the several hours of hockey there were at least two concerning injuries 1 x CTP Men and 1 x MCHC Prem 2s Women. We hope that Monique and Owen are feeling much better now and our thoughts are with you.

Whats Happening - Team Manager Duties - There are not to many areas the club lets itself down in. Unfortunately Team Reports, List of Players and Scores reporting from Team Managers is really becoming a problem. It may not be all our problem so just to be clear MCHC are still using our normal system of reporting back through Brad Wake and Rob Walker. The new system introduced by Hockey Australia, the HWA IMG system also must be entered otherwise the club can be fined, but for this year/season where we are in transition, our own system and Game reports are still very important to the club and the individual player who requires their amount of games etc to be tallied for milestone events. We like your reports in the Bulletin as well which are still included on our website and linked to "The Pride". So please keep your team records up to date and keep the humorous articles coming in.

Back to the Club Night - A special thanks to Catherine Timmell, Kyle McNess and the Social Committee for putting on the VIP event for the day and most of all the Back to the Club Party. I know our Life members really enjoy the day and it would seem now we are getting some regular attendance from our sponsors. Sorry the weather was so bad but we coped with a good  attendance and lot of good hockey.

All Grass Teams - Whether training or after games please put your goals away on completion of your event. If in doubt that there is another team using them after your session then please put them away they will soon stop you if required.

Volunteer Request - There is an urgent request for volunteers to work with the kitchen staff who are looking for part time kitchen assistants to learn the role from Lynda and Maureen. If anyone is interested and we do need your help please contact Lynda on Mob: 0418945876.

Survey - Next time you get a chance can you advise one of your committee persons or team manager if there is any interest in purchasing MCHC vehicle number plates.

Club Numbers - Just to let you know as reported by Rob Walker (Club Registrar) club member numbers this year are: 934. We are a big club and well respected in the sporting, political and residential community. Well done to you all and look forward to seeing you over the next weeks of hockey.

Melville Women 1s

Women's Ones Report: The final game of the first round saw us up against YMCC, who to be fair have struggled most of this season, but for us another game to consolidate and continue to improve across the field. The first half was played in horrid conditions and it is at this point where we must thank the ball girls and our tireless band of supporters for braving the elements. Whilst not entirely to blame, the weather did contribute to the nil all half time scoreline but we were certainly not without opportunities to score and the defence was holding tight at the other end. At half time the point was reiterated that we must produce results if not in the first five minutes, the next ten and so on. And produce results we did. In fact every five minutes of the second half we scored with no less than six different goal scorers across the team. Unfortunately a lapse in concentration from a restart saw us concede a goal towards the end of the game, an area we will continue to work on and hopefully improve. A fantastic result nevertheless and to finish the first round in second place on the ladder is none too shabby. Good work gang #themelvillegirlsarehappy.

Women Milestones

Congratulations goes to women’s top squad members, Kirsten Silvey (above top) and Holly Menegola (above bottom) who will play their 200th game for Melville City Hockey Club this weekend. For both players being under 21 years of age this is a great achievement. Congratulations also to Rachel Harries and Dee Murphy who will play their 100th games for the club this weekend.

Mens 1's

Melville Men's v CTP
Extract from Pete Freer: What a week:
  1. Australian Men lift the bar of International Hockey
  2. Australian Women gain silver at the World Cup
  3. Melville Women thrash YM
  4. Melville 2s Men thrash CTP 2s
  5. Melville 1s Men defeat CTP 1s 4 nil in Dan McEntee's 400th game for Melville.
I reflect below with one of my favourite poems by Andrew Barton Paterson (click here for full report and poem)
We have achieved a performance in the first round never seen at Melville in its history, 7 wins and 1 draw in 11 games with 28 goals for and 15 goals against, a big cry from 22 goals for and 96 against in the season before I joined the Club. ....We face a very tough Fremantle opposition next Saturday at home at Duracraft stadium...
Ride hard with us, this is a challenging track, we need your support at all times!!!

Juniors

Middle of the season, and a wet weekend resulted in some trying game conditions, so well done to all for braving the weather.   After this weekend’s game, we break for the school holidays. Games for Juniors will resume on the weekend of 25/26/27 July.
If you are looking for some hockey action during the school holidays, Australian Sports Camps are holding a clinic on our turf. They are offering a 20% discount to Melville Juniors who register. Click on this link for the discount.

We also wish those Melville players trialling and hopefully playing U13 and U15 regional hockey competition during the July holidays the best of luck.

A big mid year thank you to our tireless Junior VP, Janine Tate, who surprisingly fits in a Full Time job in as well as keeping the Junior program going.  Janine is off to South Africa to watch Matt Tate play in the School Boys Australian Team, selected during the U16 school boys tournament in 2013.  Best of luck Matt and Janine - hope you have a great time.
Have a great weekend and then holiday everyone!
