The International Studies Office completed its first Sustainability Plan in February 2020, in cooperation with the Committee on Sustainability and Office for Sustainability and in alignment with the very exciting and ambitious UVA Sustainability Plan.

Thrower Sadey Rodriguez (Laredo, Texas) is using her platform as a UVA student-athlete to make a positive impact on the world around her. With the support of her track and field teammates and coaches, she is working to make the Virginia athletics department more sustainable.

USGBC Virginia announces finalists for the 2020 Leadership Awards

These prestigious awards recognize Virginia building owners and project teams for their extra effort to accomplish LEED certification and to celebrate the local leaders who are working to create a healthier, more sustainable and resilient future in the Commonwealth. Virginia is proud to be one of the largest users per capita of LEED in the U.S. and ranked number 7 on USGBC’s 2019 list of Top 10 States for LEED.
The University strives for more sustainable, plant-based options
To help UVA reach the University’s new sustainable food goals, the SFSTF has recently launched a Plant Based Strategy Working Group, which is comprised of faculty, staff from UVA Dining and the Office for Sustainability, and student leaders from Veggies of Virginia, Bad Vegan and the UVA Community Garden, to galvanize student interest in plant-forward foods at the University.

Though most events are on hold at the moment, consider taking this time to prepare to make all UVA events more sustainable when we do return. Learn how to put together green events and meetings, with the help of UVA Sustainability, UVA Recycling, and Black Bear Composting.


ERI scholars are working to develop integrative models on regional to global scales. These models will be capable of better understanding the interactions between negative emissions strategies and various environmental policy objectives, including but not limited to water quality, water availability, ecosystem health, and renewable energy generation. Our panel of decarbonization faculty will be facilitated by professor and ERI Associate Director, Andres Clarens.

The benefits of renewable energy from solar can be cost effective and contribute to economic development. It also aligns with state climate goals and recently passed legislation, but it takes a team to execute, from planning and paperwork to installation and coordination.
