The Global Strategy Mid-Term Conference comes to a successful end

The Mid-Term Conference ended last Thursday following two and a half days of successful exchanges. The conference provided an occasion to showcase the achievements of activities under the Global Strategy at the global, regional and country levels, and start discussion on the next phase, taking into account inputs provided by countries and other institutions.

In her opening speech Dr Philomena Nyarko said “we are not at the mid-term of this process, we have just turned the first pages of a book”. The achievements made to date are not the finishing line:  there are still a great number of things to do to help countries implement their strategies and particularly to help them produce and collect the data they need and make this data accessible to all users, especially to decision makers.

During the meeting Romeo Recide was appointed as co-chair of the GSC, Dr Philomena Nyarko as chair of the Global Executive Board (GEB),  and Dr. Albina Chuwa as new GSC member. In addition, the composition of the SAC members was endorsed.

The main objectives of the meeting were the endorsement of the new Global Strategy output “Countries supported in the Design and Implementation of an integrated agricultural survey programme”, the revision of the integrated budget of the Global Office and the endorsement of the regional action plans for LAC and CIS. Finally, members were informed about the possible impact of the funding gap on the sustainability of the programme and updated on the mid-term evaluation currently in progress.

Seventh International Conference on Agriculture Statistics (ICAS VII) – Call For Papers

The Seventh International Conference on Agriculture Statistics will take place on 26-28 October 2016 in Rome, Italy. Traditionally, it is preceded by a two day training session for young statisticians, particularly from developing countries, which is organised by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Conference will be hosted by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) in close collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), under the leadership of an International Scientific Programme Committee, which is co-chaired by the President of Istat and the Chief Statistician of FAO.

The Conference will provide an ideal occasion to respond to changing needs and opportunities for agricultural statistics, especially in terms of supporting the indicator framework for the Sustainable Development Goals, to be endorsed by the UN Statistical Commission in March 2016. Given the nature of the Conference, all statisticians involved in agricultural, forestry, fishery, and rural statistics, including statisticians from developing countries, are encouraged to participate.

We are pleased to share the Call for Papers and invite you to disseminate the document to your staff and your professional network in order to ensure broad participation in the Conference from key stakeholders in food and agriculture statistics.

Proposals for papers can already be submitted via the ICAS VII website until 31 JUL 2015. For more information on sessions, session formats, topics and selection criteria please consult the attached Call for Papers document or visit the ICAS VII website at http://icas2016.istat.it
