Happy May from Kids & Art! View in browser
May Greetings from K&A!
Hello Kids & Art Community,

I can hardly believe that we are halfway through the month of May already. Here at K&A, it has been a busy month, a month full of workshops, events and community connections. It is exactly the kind of busy we love, and I am beyond proud of our team and our community for the deeply important work being done and the powerful impact it is having.

Kids & Art set out on a mission to bring healing through art and to provide support for the entire care circle of a child facing cancer. This month, we not only touched patients and families through our weekly hospital workshops and monthly destination workshop, but we extended our reach further into the community to others who needed support. We brought art to invigorate and encourage LLS champions in their journey to fundraise for research and cures. We spread creativity at an annual city parade and fair while sharing about our work and our services. We also created space in a school community to grieve and honor a classmate, student & friend.

It is a privilege to do this work, and we want to say thank you to all of our supporters for believing in us and for believing in the power of art in healing.

Warmly,

Suzanne Yau
Executive Director
This beautiful mural was created by a kindergarten class in memory of one of their friends.

"I just wanted to reach out and say thank you! I have a kindergartner now. He goes to ----- Elementary and several weeks ago his friend since preschool passed away. The Kids and Art Foundation will be making a second visit this week to help the kids process their grief and I’m so grateful to you and your foundation. Thank you for all you do in the community to help kids with cancer and those that love them." - parent of a classmate
Google Destination Workshop
Returning to Google with the K&A community, including patients, siblings, parents, grandparents, volunteers and artists was an absolute treat. Walking onto the campus with its multi-colored bicycles and inviting decor, everyone was filled with anticipation for what was to come. They were not disappointed as their day filled with endless creative opportunities. Participants explored with Google VR once again, designed Google Doodles and recorded messages about K&A for our Youtube channel. From paper quilling, to steampunk insects, to printmaking, to various forms of painting, to recycled sculptures, to party frogs, to Altoid dioramas, and collage posters, everyone was able to partake in an abundance of creative expression. See more pics here.
Palo Alto May Fete
Kids & Art hosted an art booth at the 2019 Palo Alto May Fete Fair. More than seventy five participants gathered around the table to make paper bird puppets that flapped their wings in the wind. With the help of volunteers Spencer, Sejal, Melisa and Rachel, the birds were then attached to long wooden dowels which had been wound in wildly patterned washi tape. The children loved making their puppets and were proud to pose with their creations! Learn more here.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Event
We were very excited to reconnect with LLS this year to support their Woman/Man of the Year candidates in their fundraising efforts towards cancer research. Our Board member and longtime supporting artist, Rinat Goren, led an art experience inspired by this year's Boy of the Year and his favorite color. Participants explored with paints while creating alongside this patient hero.

Film-maker and cancer survivor, Hernan Barangan, traveled to all 50 states to tell stories of others who have been diagnosed. We encourage you to share it's powerful message with others. Pre-order here.

Opening Reception at SF Women's Artist Gallery
SFWA once again generously donated their Youth Wall to Kids & Art Foundation to exhibit the creations of our young artists. It was a wonderful evening of connection and celebration.
Author of the Month
A member of our K&A community or a like-minded supporter of our mission to heal through the arts
Jessica Santos is the Communications Manager for The Painted Turtle. She has worked for the family of SeriousFun camps founded by Paul Newman for almost two decades. She believes camp has the power to not only transform the lives of the children and families, but the people who serve them as well.

Jessica attests that working at Camp is a gift. She has learned so much about life, courage, and perseverance from the children and families she has had the privilege of serving.

Read her thoughts about the importance of camp in our blog here.
