Sea Creature Expo Engages Visitors

Thomas Jefferson school logoAnnually, fifth graders take on this major research project, diving in deep on one sea creature each and making models that have moving parts. The project concluded Friday with an Expo where parents and students from the lower grades could tour all the displays and hear the students' short presentations. There were sharks, whales, jellyfish, octopus, squid, penguins, and every imaginable sea creature. The depth of research combined with the creative details of the models was awe-inspiring.

Equivalent Relationships with IB Themes

Henderson school logoHenderson math students in sixth grade are discussing “how we organize ourselves” through the lens of equal relationships. Students are converting/representing forms of numbers as fractions, decimals, percents, and models. Even though in 6th grade, PYP becomes MYP, classes are still talking about how it all ties together!

Fractions in First grade

Mt. Daniel school logoWe probably shouldn't let the sixth graders know about the first-grade approach to fractions last week that demonstrated fractions by cutting up donuts, and had math problems using donut holes! The student here is cutting a donut into fourths, and his classmates can see the action projected on the screen.

Celebrating Mentoring Program

FCCPS logoGathering in the Henderson cafetorium on Friday afternoon, mentors and their "mentees" joined with staff to commemorate the year-long FCCPS program that pairs first year, or new to Falls Church, teachers and staff with folks willing to share their experience and time. It was a celebration of the first semester's successes and an affirmation of the support available throughout the year. See the video about the Mentoring Program here
