Intensive Care for Developing Readers

Thomas Jefferson school logoReading Intensive Care Unit (RICU) is in its second year at TJ. Students in second grade are benefiting from the weekly hour-long literacy boost that has them work on reading, writing, and vocabulary through engaging subjects including, this week, robots! The program runs for eight weeks.

Nominees Surprised in Classrooms

FCEF logoThe seven FCCPS teachers nominated for the FCEF Teacher of the Year award were surprised in their classrooms yesterday with balloons, the packets of nomination letters, and tickets to the FCEF gala. There were tears, laughter, and smiles along with hearty applause from their students. The nominees are:
+ Celeste Carson  Sixth Grade Math Teacher, Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School
+ Erin Craddock  Fourth Grade Teacher, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School
+ Julie Huber  Physical Education Teacher, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School
+ Laura McNamara  Kindergarten Teacher, Mount Daniel Elementary School
+ Lisa Mueller  Fifth Grade Teacher, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School
+ Marc Robarge  Art Teacher, George Mason High School
+ Haley Wingfield  Kindergarten Teacher, Mount Daniel Elementary School         
The winner, is announced in April, is selected by a panel of judges and awarded $1500 from the FCEF. The winner is a finalist for the Washington Post Teacher of the Year Award. All nominees are honored in the Celebration of Excellence in May. Congratulations!

Furlough Assistance Available from FCCPS

With the federal government furlough affecting so many in our Falls Church City community, assistance is available from FCCPS for impacted families and students, including:

The elementary schools' GIVE Day is coming up. Watch as the TJ ambassadors visit Mt. Daniel to explain the program to the younger students.

On Monday, January 21st, elementary students and their families are invited to the GIVE Day events in the TJ gym and cafeteria. Power Packs will be assembled, toys will be made, and the spirit of giving back will be abundantly present. Plan to attend: 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Swim Teams Rack up More Wins

George Mason sports logoBoth the Mason Boys and Girls Swim teams continued their winning seasons with victories in last Saturday's 4-way meet. This Saturday they swim against Spotswood and Madison High Schools at the Manassas Park Community Pool at 3:30 p.m. The recognition of seniors on both teams will take place during the mid-point break of the meet.

Notice to TJ Walkers

Thomas Jefferson school logoToday the path through Howard Herman Park is closed again from Broad Street to the Rollins St. bridge as city workers make repairs to the stone walkways. The section from the bridge to the backside of the TJ playground will be open. This is the last planned day for the closure.
