As Good as Gold

ME Henderson school logoThe ensemble that will perform "A Friend Like Me" in Aladdin Jr. had the chance to try on their sparkly costumes at rehearsal yesterday. It was the last day the huge cast was rehearsing at Henderson because, as of today, all the rehearsals will be on stage at George Mason. Practicing the choreography in the bigger space will be a great help, as will getting a sense of the auditorium their singing is going to fill. Nine days until opening night! Teaching Friendship, Reinforcing the Good

In recognition of National School Counseling Week which aims to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors, we're focusing on each school's counselors in this week's Morning Announcements. Thomas Jefferson school logoToday we highlight TJ's counselors, Laurie Prather left and Carol Seaver. All through the school year, they visit TJ classrooms to share age-appropriate books and lessons on friendship, bullying, and conflict resolution; work on the Tiger Stripes positive behavior reinforcement program; and support all classrooms and school-wide efforts to create a great school environment, including individual counseling sessions, lunch bunches, and more. This week for National School Counseling Week, and all year long be sure to share your appreciation with these critical members of TJ's staff.

Progress on New Gym Floor

ME Henderson school logoThe replacement floor for the gym at Henderson is moving along. After the second flood in less than a year, the first from a break in the sprinkler system, the second from the high groundwater from heavy rains, the replacement this time is a laminate. Now that all the prep is complete, it's going down in wide, long rolls and the progress is expected to be quick.

Next in the Series: Parenting in Digital Age

FCCPS logoMark your calendars for next Monday, February 11, for Parenting in the Digital Age: Technology and Youth. The Health & Wellness Advisory Committee sponsors this Parent Series talk. Did you know that teens and tweens spend an average of more than 5 hours a day on screen time (excluding schoolwork), and devices are often used to displace emotions? Christina Frank, LMFT, will speak at 7:00 p.m. in TJ's cafeteria. The evening is for all K-12 parents. She'll touch on emotional/social and brain development, inappropriate content, family contracts, and more. Here's a report on some apps you've never heard of that students are using, and a link to the flyer for this event.

Planning Ahead

Students: Help "Name Our New Street"

The school access street on the new GMHS/MEHMS campus needs a name, and the School Board invites FCCPS students to make suggestions. As the map above shows, the street will follow the existing unnamed entrance, starting at Haycock Rd., and passing in front of both schools, before exiting the campus onto Leesburg Pike. Both Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School and George Mason High School will have addresses on this street.
Students from all grades are invited to suggest creative ideas to Name Our New Street. Name it after a person, a place, a philosophy of learning, a landmark, a historical event, or an IB learner trait. The suggestion period is open through February 14.
