Dry ice demonstration at last year's STEAM night

Tonight from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Come Enjoy STEAM Night at TJ

Thomas Jefferson school logoStarting at 6:30 p.m. tonight TJ's STEAM Night will run in the gym and cafeteria with multiple demonstrations and activities. GM's Robotics team and Virginia Tech Thinkabit will be doing presentations, and the 5th grade STEAM Night ambassadors will be running stations with drones, straw rockets, coding, cryptography, maracas, paper airplanes, and a scavenger hunt. The theme this year is the Power of Possibilities: a study into the impacts of African Americans in the STEAM field. Join the fun! It's a great, free hands-on event for students and their families.

STEAM Spotlight: Tosin Adetoro

At 36, Tosin Adetoro, who started in STEAM in 2005, represents a growing number of female educators in the industry. As an African American STEAM teacher, she is part of an elite group. According to 2017 data from the National Science Foundation, just 10 percent of minority women were employed as scientists and engineers in the U.S.

Team Work for Fun in Physical Education

thomas Jefferson school logoThis week both second and third grade classes are doing a unit with parachutes in Physical Education class. The students need to work in sync to get the huge "sail" to move they way they intend. Activities include trapping air to make a large "mushroom" shape much taller than them, trapping air in a "tent" they could all sit inside, and a game of cat and mouse where the moving parachute helps hide the students who are "mice." See additional photos here.

Today: New Bus Routes Begin

The implementation of the updated FCCPS school bus routes begins today. The goal is to make our transportation of students to and from school more efficient and reliable.

While there are NO changes to bus stops, you will notice route adjustments including route names, arrival times, and the buses used for all schools except for Jessie Thackrey Preschool.

Scooting Around the Room, Telling Time

Mt Daniel school logoPaper clock faces were places all around the room and students moved, or scooted, from one station to another converting the clock's analog time to a numerical, digital time to note on their answer sheets. The first graders are practicing telling time to the hour and half hour while keeping physically active and mentally engaged.

Escape Room Themed Review

ME Henderson school logoScience students are getting ready for an assessment on cellular energy processes: photosynthesis and respiration. In class this week students played an "escape room" where they cracked codes by problem-solving and answering questions on the topic. The review engaged the whole room as the seventh graders worked in small groups to "escape" the scenario.

Wrestling with a Win on Senior Night

George Mason sports logoThe Wrestling team recognized six seniors at the mid-point of their meet with Yorktown last night: from left front row, no hat, Jack Felgar, Bryan Villegas Sanchez, West Hagler, Sierra Sulc, Connor Murray and Nick Zaenger. Many of the dozen-plus Mustang wrestlers won their matches, and the team won the meet overall. Good luck in the post-season!
