Fee Deadline Extended

Conference Field Visit
An optional field visit Water in the Dutch landscape has been organised for the afternoon of March 3rd, after the end of the main conference programme. Delegates will be able to explore the local region by bicycle, visit a local museum and part of the World Heritage defensive site around Amsterdam. Further details.

The conference consists of paper sessions, posters and workshops. A session lasts between 80-90 minutes and contains 3 or 4 presentations. Paper presentations are normally 15-20 minutes long including questions. Register now

Publishing your research
Delegates now have the opportunity to publish their research in the European Journal of Geography. The journal has a special issue devoted to the conference theme and the deadline for submitting completed manuscripts online is 25 April 2017. Submissions are only accepted online. HERE Map Creator
HERE is an open location platform with activities around HERE’s Map Creator Communities. HERE has been working with local authorities as data providers and with local, regional and national volunteers to provide “real world” edits and feedback on their maps. HERE has started a global community program, working with local schools, universities and other authorities, in order to offer the freshest and most accurate map to their customers. Through use cases and community events, they will show the Map Creator tool and community. Find out more

Let's Move
A spatial activity
This workshop focuses on activating methods for K-12 education. Students simulate geographic phenomena and processes by moving their arms and legs or by changing position in the classroom. The classroom represents geographic space, and students are actually part of the geographic system. Doing so, geography comes to life. This workshop was have two spatial classroom activities, and discuss the characteristics of their design.

Polder Workshop
Dry feet in the polder?
The workshop deals with designing flood-risk education in the Netherlands based on the research that shows that Dutch citizens including students show an 'awareness gap' with respect to water management and water safety.
It examines a flood-risk education program aimed at enhancing 15-year-old students' flood risk perception and preparedness intentions in the Netherlands. .

IB Nexus Thinking
Exploring Nexus thinking in the new IB Diploma Programme geography course
‘Nexus Thinking’ is central to the new geography course. This workshop will allow participants to explore the interconnected challenges of food, water and energy security, through the systems and complexity approaches of the course. It will be part presentation, part interactive and will include the opportunity to participate in a practical critical thinking activity involving the Nexus and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Resource Flows
Resource Flows in a Circular Economy: narratives for the future
This session aims to explore how resources, information and energy could flow within a circular economy and how designing for effective flows can make our economy work in the long term. The session encourages educators to participate in a discussion of the current challenges, what the possible responses might be, and how to advance teaching and learning to ensure critical engagement for the future.

The workshop will underline the words of the UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson on 13 January 2016: "The universal inclusiveness of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is an ethical imperative to think, and to act, comprehensively and holistically.

Special Session
Textbooks old and new: seeking paper abstracts
This session aims to integrate both the traditional and innovative approaches currently used in research on schoolbooks and curricula from primary education to upper university education in geography, set in the context that the importance and function of teaching materials has changed.
