In this newsletter, we announce the launch of the new GeoCapabilities Web site and teacher training materials and offer invitations to two exciting and very relevant events, School on the Cloud - a project that explores Cloud Computing in learning and teaching and a Journal of Geography in Higher Education event. The newsletter also has an OSGeo logo competition and introduces MapSwipe for humanitarian aid.

We are hoping all EUROGEO Members and geography enthusiasts are having a great break over the summer.

GeoCapabilities Web launch


The GeoCapabilities project has produced a new teacher training website that draws on principles of human capability development as an approach to preparing teachers as future curriculum leaders.
 
The website explains these principles and also features four training modules. The modules are supported with workshop materials, additional key readings, and videos. The website is intended for use in both initial teacher training and the professional development for practicing teachers. More information 

Invitation: SoC conference 


On 18 November 2016, School on the Cloud’s 3rd conference will be held at the Flemish Parliament in Brussels. School on the Cloud is the European network that explores new dynamic Cloud-based ways in education. You are invited to register and attend the one day event with keynotes from Professor Sugata Mitra and Ewan McIntosh..Places are limited. Register here  

Journal of Geography in Higher Education

JGHE Free Event


The Journal of Geography in Higher Education is celebrating 40 years and is holding a free one day celebration of learning and teaching in Geography in HE over the last 40 and this will take place on Thursday December 15th 2016 at the RGS-IBG, Kensington Gore, London, from 10.00am to 4pm. Send your title and abstract (250 words) to Sonja Rewhorn, by 15th September 2016.

MapSwipe: humanitarian aid


MapSwipe is an app that allows you to support humanitarian aid by simply using your mobile. In a disaster or humanitarian crisis, knowledge regarding the location of possibly affected and vulnerable people is crucial to provide effective support. MapSwipe allows you to map these locations using your smartphone. Contributors are asked to mark map tiles and to thereby provide information regarding inhabited regions. More information

NGOs And Decision Making


The European Committee on Democracy and Governance (CDDG) in cooperation with the Conference of International Non-Governmental Organisations is preparing new guidelines to ensure meaningful civil participation in political decision-making.

A wide public consultation on the draft guidelines is being organised during the summer period before finalising the guidelines. Email any comments (in English or in French) on the draft to the CDDG Secretariat by 4 September 2016.

OSGeo logo competition

Logo Competition


The UN OpenGIS initiative Committee invites the community to develop the official logo of the UN OpenGIS initiative. This logo will be used on official documents of the UN OpenGIS initiative. Anyone may submit artwork. The winning designer will receive a UN, OSGeo and G4A awarding certificate and her/his name will be awarded on the webpage of UN OpenGIS initiative. All artwork must be uploaded to the OSGeo wiki and listed on this site by 11:59pm GMT, August 31st, 2016. EJG Published


The new issue of EUROGEO's journal, the European Journal of Geography, has been published. There are articles on Teaching Glocal Issues, Geo-literacy, Strategic Spatial Thinking, Impact of Globalization, Ukranian Crisis and Food Tourism.

Congratulations to the authors. Help to improve the status of EJG by citing articles in your research papers and publications.

Bilingual Geography Course


The publishing house SOP Oświatowiec Toruń and the Association of European Geographers (EUROGEO) are happy to announce the 11th edition of the international methodology workshop “UN sustainable development goals – teach them bilingually” in Toruń, Poland, 7–9 October 2016. GI Learner
