Help test the YouthMetre e-tool
EUROGEO has regularly been involved in a number of open data projects and activities. Now the association ocoordinates the "Forward Looking" YouthMetre Project - which aims to present open EU data on youth policy in Europe and encourage young people to become active in their region. The e-tool is being developed to empower youngsters to challenge policies for young people by exploring good practices and identifying the needs of youth. We invite you to test the different elements of the YouthMetre e-tool and contact the project team with your recommendations to improve its quality. Find out more

Cloud Education Declaration
The School on the Cloud Project held its third summit at the Flemish Parliament in Brussels towards the end of 2016. The Cloud is very significant in creating jobs and economic development. Online maps, GIS, data sources and social media rely on the Cloud. The project has examined some of the many benefits that Cloud Computing offers education. Videos of the keynote presentations.are available online, At the end of the summit, the participants agreed a Declaration sent to the European Commission, which presents a Cloud Strategy for European Education. GIS Pledge For EU Schools
Last December ESRI announced it will pledge free access to ArcGIS Online for schools in Europe. The plan follows up their activities in the USA via the ConnectEd programme initiated by President Obama three years ago. Thousands of schools have been connected here using GIS in STEM education. The pledge was made at the Digital Skills and Jobs launch event organised by the European Commission. More informaiton

Student competitions update
As part of the International Year of Global Understanding, EUROGEO launches two competitions in conjunction with the IGU Commission for Geographic Education and Esri. The competitions are for high school pupils aged 15-19 and university students aged 19+. The task is to make a story map connected with one or more of the themes of the international year and linking the local to the global. Deadline extended to February 7th. Find out more

GIForum 2017
The Call for the submission of papers and abstracts for the GI_Forum 2017 (Salzburg, July 4-7. 2017) has opened! A major part of the conference will be devoted to education issues with, learning opportunities within the Geomedia / GIS domain. Contributions based on theoretical, practical and empirical work are welcomed across the full age group of learners, from primary education to post-secondary education. The submission deadline is February 1, 2017. Find Out More

EUROGEO 2017
The Early Bird deadline is approaching for EUROGEO 2017. Challenges for geographical education is the theme of EUROGEO 2017. Geographical education is facing many challenges at school and in higher education. The purpose of EUROGEO 2017 is to examine some of these issues and their possible responses.
The conference will take place on 2-3 March 2017 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. You are invited to submit sessions, workshops, paper abstracts and posters. Find out more

GI Forum Journal
GI-Forum now allows year round submission and publishes two issues annually in a peer-reviewed open access format at http://epub.oeaw.ac.at/gi_forum. Traditionally, GI_Forum has a strong section on all things educational and is a good reference point for Geomedia-based learning. Submission is possible in conjunction with the conference, but can also be done as a single paper beyond the conference. Support is available for young researchers. Find Out More

Papers from the Perth III mountain conference are published in Mountain research & Development and contribute to Future Earth. They include a tool to compare mountain photos, gender-sensitive participatory agroforestry, and social impact assessment. Other paperss exploreecosystem services, visitors’ use of energy, and environmental impacts of migration.

Map Design Competition
The International Cartographic Association and the Commission on Cartography and Children invite you to participate in the next Barbara Petchenik Map Competition 2017, an event created with the aim of promoting the creative representation of the world in graphic form by children.
In 2017, this is organized in the context of activities programmed within the International Map Year. For this reason, the theme for the 2017 competition is the same as the motto of the International Map Year: “We love maps”.
Entries can be nominated in four age groups: under 6 years, 6-8 years, 9-12 years and 13-15 years. The deadline for the participation in the contest is 1 May 2017.
All the documents needed to begin the organisation of the Barbara Petchenik Competition 2017, with rules for teachers, parents and national coordinators are published on the ICA website (http://icaci.org/petchenik/) and via their Facebook profile (https://www.facebook.com/icaccc/).

Tell Your Story Project
EUROGEO is a partner in a new Erasmus Plus project, seeking to use storytelling as an approach to reducing early school leaving. The initiative uses StoryMaps as a tool to encourage young people to express their issues needs and concerns.
Karl Donert represented EUROGEO at the first project meeting, held in Pau, France at the offices of the NGO coordinator of the activity "Pistes Solidaires". More information will follow in future newsletters.
