Dreams Can Propel You To Working Happy

What do you dream of for your career? Dreams set a vision for you of what will make you happy. Pursue them and there is a good chance you will get where you want to be.
A lot can dash your dreams – a feeling that you will never achieve them, other people discouraging you, not having role models who have achieved the dreams you seek, not committing to achieving your dreams, an aversion to risk or a discomfort with uncertainty. However, if you validate your dreams they can be the fuel for your journey to working happy.
How can you get started? Here are a few suggestions:
  • Identify your dreams. Don’t hold back or think of practicality at first. Just know what they are. Write them down.
  • Pick one dream and do some visioning about it. Picture your career once that dream comes true.
  • Believe it is possible for you to achieve your dream and identify what you need to do to get there.
  • Commit to taking one action a week towards your dream.
  • Every quarter, review your progress and course-correct if you need to.
The dreams you have for your career are a starting point. Who knows where your dreams will bring you? Most likely, your dreams will bring you to a good place because they come from a positive and hopeful place within you. Let your dreams lead you to working happy!

What's Up For You?

We love answering your questions on your journey to working happy!

Q: I have been going at such a fast pace in the last two months. In past times I have been aware that I have been going too fast and heading towards burnout. Once I realized that, I did what I needed to rebalance. This seems different. I am thinking that the world is just going faster – instant communications, so much information, so much to do. Do you have any advice, Ann, about what I am feeling?

A: I think you are very astute and are sensing correctly that our world is speeding up. Old ways of balancing and dealing with life do not seem to be working. New approaches are called for. One perspective that I was guided to is to find the still point in the center of the storm. Turn inward, as the outside world spins.
It is like the quiet eye of a hurricane. Try to find a still point within from which you can create a perspective on all that surrounds you and find your way in it. Give some thought to finding peace. What will work for you?

Radio Interview
Many of you know that, in 2005, I wrote a leadership book based on Donald Trump’s reality tv show The Apprentice. Little did I know then that he would be our President today. Subsequently, I was interviewed for the Insight On Coaching Podcast with Tom Floyd (currently Learning and Development Partner for Global Marketing Solutions at Facebook) along with contestants from Seasons 1 and 2 of The Apprentice. Listen here for business lessons you can learn from the show including "always watch your back,” “leadership skills matter,” and "risks are part of every day in business". More information about my book and a sample chapter are here.
