Bull Run Filtration design is taking shape

We recently completed two months of drilling work to better understand ground conditions at the facility site and along the pipeline routes. Now we’re using those findings to inform design. The new facilities will be key components of a resilient water system designed to recover from an earthquake. The new pipelines will improve overall system reliability.

Super-sized silos delivered for Improved Corrosion Control Treatment project

How do you get two 50-foot silos in place at Lusted Hill? Very carefully. Successfully maneuvering the delivery and installation of the two silos for the Improved Corrosion Control Treatment facility was a momentous feat for both people and machine earlier this month. When the facility is fully operational, two naturally occurring substances—sodium carbonate and carbon dioxide, will adjust our water chemistry to make it less corrosive to lead and other metals that can be found in some home and building plumbing.

Large specialized truck and trailer rigs were required to transport the huge, fully assembled silos to the site. Crews then used giant cranes to carefully move and install the silos.
Watch the silos’ exciting and complicated journey.

Heads up! SE Lusted Road traffic impacts coming soon

A water line must be installed under SE Lusted Road near the Lusted Hill facility for the Improved Corrosion Control Treatment project. The work will likely require a temporary closure of SE Lusted Road. Local access will be accommodated. We will notify neighbors ahead of the road closure. Join your neighbors in helping crews get home to their families at night by following all traffic signals, signs and posted speed limits.

Bull Run Filtration Site Advisory Group update

We are using input from neighbors and the community to finalize the Bull Run Filtration Good Neighbor Agreement. The agreement documents the Water Bureau’s commitments to filtration facility neighbors and reflects community preferences and feedback on communications, design, stormwater management, and safety.

At the May 13, 2021, meeting advisors heard from Water Bureau leads for communication, design, construction, and operation how Good Neighbor commitments will be upheld. Visit the May 13 Site Advisory Group meeting webpage to view the meeting and review meeting materials.
Site Advisory Group: Good Neighbor Commitment & Facility Design Update
In our next Site Advisory Group meeting, we’ll share the final Good Neighbor Agreement and provide an update on design progress for the filtration facility. The meeting will be held virtually using Zoom.
Date: Thursday, June 10, 2021
Time: 6. – 7 p.m.

Please register to attend the meeting. The meeting video and materials will also be posted to the meeting webpage

About the Bull Run Treatment Projects

To comply with federal Safe Drinking Water Act regulations, the Portland Water Bureau is building a water filtration facility, new pipelines, and an improved corrosion control treatment facility. The Bull Run Treatment Projects will provide consistent, high-quality drinking water that meets today’s water quality standards, help address aging infrastructure concerns and future risks and regulations, and improve system resilience to help keep our water safe and abundant for generations to come.
