The power of pronouns!

Pronoun button from Iowa State University that reads "My pronouns are: They Them Theirs"Instead of making assumptions about a person's pronouns based on their name or appearance, making a practice of sharing preferred pronouns can create more affirming and inclusive classrooms and workplaces. Today we celebrate the pronouns they/them.

"They" is usually gender neutral. A person who goes by "they" could identify as a man, a woman, both, neither, or something else entirely. Three quick tips:
  1. It is important to remember that people's genders are generally private, sharing pronouns is not an invitation to ask probing or personal questions.
  2. If you make a mistake and misgender someone with the wrong pronouns, correct yourself then move the conversation along.
  3. If you are not sure what pronouns a person prefers, do not be afraid to ask.
