Amending EC Directive 2005/65/

“Good practice guidelines for quality systems” (GPG) now incorporated in EU Directive.

Directive 2005/65/EC already foresaw the drafting of European guidelines for quality systems which has now been completed and approved. The Commission delegated the work to a working group of the Council of Europe who wrote the GPG, and now Directive 2005/62/EC has been amended to make this binding. The GPG is published with the Council of Europe Blood guide. The text of the amending directive can be read through link below.

Report from EU Funded Project

Economic landscapes of human Tissues and Cells for clinical application in EU

The safe and sustainable supply of tissues and cells is an essential pillar in modern EU healthcare and a priority for national and EU-level health authorities alike. While tissues and cells are usually donated by citizens without any payment, they still require some further processing and handling before they can be applied as therapy. Costs are involved and different options exist to recover (part of) these costs. Understanding economic aspects of the tissues and cells sector can help Member States in taking, increasingly difficult, decisions on how to organize this essential service of public healthcare at best

The FDA is investigating four cases of non-travel related Zika cases in south Florida. As a consequence of this, in two counties (Miami-Dade and Broward) FDA requested that all BEs in those counties cease the collections of blood immediately until they have implemented individual testing of units for Zika Virus RNA or until implementation of Pathogen Inactivation technology. MSM Deferral Policies

Irish Health minister Simon Harris announced last week that Ireland might be relaxing its permanent MSM deferrals after the IBTS Board recommended to do so in a report. This also would mean that a law suit against this permanent deferral would be dropped.  Under the changes planned, men who have sex with men will be allowed to donate blood a year after being sexually active or five years after they have been cleared of a sexually transmitted infection. Source:

The FDA opened the door last Tuesday to a change in its MSM blood donor deferral recommendations, which is now set at 1 year following their last sexual encounter. In December the FDA overturned this ban on all blood donations from MSM, saying the change was based on science showing an indefinite ban was not necessary. The FDA might now go further. Gay rights advocates say the latest update did not go far enough and that the agency's recommendations should move closer to individual risk assessments. Their criticism intensified in the wake of a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in June, which saw many gay men unable to donate blood even as blood banks put out calls for donors.
