'Tubes' Project open

All members can sign up now as beneficiaries.

The Blood Samples Collection Collaborative Procurement Project has entered a new phase! All EBA members are now invited to join as a beneficiary. To make sure you benefit from the most advantageous purchasing terms, please sign up before June 10, 2016, and follow the tender process. The tender will be launched on June 28. The deadline for the award of contracts is Oct 1, 2016. Once interest is confirmed, it will possible to join the contract at any time during the 4 years of the project (Oct 2016 to Sep 2020).

World Blood Donor Day 2016

On the WHO website, there is now information available on World Blood Donor Day 2016; the theme is Blood Connects us all. This year's WBDD is organised with Sanquin as host. Last Monday, it was confirmed that King Willem-Alexander will open the day. Attached [600MB, pdf] is a presentation explaining the theme and customisable communication materials

NHSBT Strategy 2016-2020

NHSBT's Strategic Plan for the next five years has been published. Key is the promotion of VNRD, and meeting patient needs in an environment of declining demand. The numbers of organs offered for transplantation will be increased by promoting organ donation more widely in the UK. Lastly, there is a focus on investing in IT systems.

EBA VIP Survey

All Board Members have received a link to the EBA Values, Issues and Policy Survey. Response rate is rising, with as of today 36 out of 55 members responding (65%). We ask those who received a link to fill in the survey this week, as the survey closes Friday 27 May. Contact Willemijn if you have any questions.

Missing Types Webinar: 6 June | 22.00 CET

Missing Types goes global in 2016: 22 countries representing 24 blood services have now joined. ABC will be hosting a webinar with the campaign’s creator, Jon Latham from NHSBT on Monday, June 6 at 4 pm eastern (22.00pm CET). More information attached. EBA Research Grant

The EBA Executive Board often receives requests for funding. To streamline these requests, a guideline and template for funding has been approved. Funding for research purposes and projects will be possible for those not covered by other grants available. The acceptance criteria require that improvements will be made to EBA member performance, in safety, efficiency or sufficiency. The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2016, however requests received up to 20 June could be considered by the Executive in their meeting of 28 June.

Zika Virus: EC Preparedness Plan | ECDC RRA

Tuesday 24 May, the ECDC published the 6th version of the Rapid Risk Assessment on Zika Virus Disease and last Friday, 20 May, the EC published a new draft Zika Virus Preparedness plan (EBAse link) with help from the EBA EID Monitor group. This draft will be discussed in the National Competent Authorities (NCA) - EC meeting at end the end of May; changes are likely to happen. The EC policy officer noted that, in parallel, plans are in place to develop chapters on Tissues & Cells and Organ, using expertise from the field.

Open Position

The Medical Faculty at the University of Helsinki has established the first Professorship in Transfusion and Cell Therapy in Finland. This arrangement is made in collaboration with the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service (FRC BS). The appointee and FRC BS will negotiate over a suitable secondary position in the Blood Service. The position is now open for applications, requested at latest by 20 June, 2016.
