The Power of a Growth Mindset

Happy October! I hope all is well in your world and you had a good September. September is always a big month in our family as I celebrate another zoom around the calendar, as does my father - who actually turned 80 this year - Happy Birthday Dad!

September has also been our first full month living on Sydney's North Shore which has provided a very different perspective of the city. The setting is spectacular and I'm still in that magical phase of exploring and discovering new places. I have to say that I never get tired of the view across the harbour - truly awesome!
I've been thinking a lot recently about Mindset and it's correlation with success, very much inspired by the work of Carol Dweck, the world-renowned Stanford University psychologist. Carol proposed that everything in your life comes down to your mindset and there are only two types - Fixed and Growth. Whereas the former is underpinned by a belief that your abilities are fixed by your upbringing or genetics, a Growth mindset supports the belief that your abilities are the starting point from which to expand and develop through effort, perseverance and practise.
I subscribe fully to the Growth philosophy and have spent a lot of time improving myself and my abilities - a never-ending labour of love. A key part of my mission is to help others expand their comfort zones and achieve more than they ever imagined. And it all starts with your mindset.

If you like the sound of this type of thinking, here are 5 tips to help you move forward:
1) Feed your mind with inspiring information
Jim Rohn, the famous philosopher, said that you become like the people you associate with and the books you read. Whilst changing your whole social circle can be quite difficult, you can spend more time with people that energise you and stop reading the negative news and replace that habit with uplifting, energy-inducing motivational books and podcasts from Audible.

2) Feed your body and mind with the best quality nutrition
In our modern world, food is readily available, but it can be nutritionally poor. In our fast-changing, uncontrollable world, what you put into your mouth is one thing you can control, so make the decision to upgrade your nutrition to fuel your body with greatness. Here's how.

3) Feed your emotions by allowing yourself to take a break
A daily practice of meditation is a success habit that many leading experts in business and other sectors adopt. Don't know where to start? Try one of the many recorded, guided meditations available so that all you have to do is press 'Play'. Check-out Tara Brach's meditations here.

4) Feed your fitness by moving your body
No time? Try "walk and talk" meetings so that you integrate moving into your day-to-day life. I love these for one-to-one meetings in particular as the moving helps you think more clearly and creatively. Particularly useful for more sensitive conversations.

5) Feed your excitement
To promote growth, try one thing every week that pushes you out of your comfort zone. If you practice it consistently, your comfort zone will expand until it no longer bothers you at all. Waling across the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a scary experience if you don't like heights (like me), but running across it every single day has helped me get used to it so that it no longer bothers me at all! Yay!
