President's Message

Aloha Chamber Members:

As the Chamber becomes more active on policy issues, promotional activities and economic development initiatives, media coverage and inquiries of the Chamber and its membership are increasing. For example, during the legislative session, the Chamber is generally called upon to comment on a bill moving through the process. Additionally, reporters often ask if we can recommend a member to comment on a business-related story. Due to media deadlines and the short turnaround, we often have a difficult time identifying and referring a company representative to be interviewed for comment.
Your voice, your expertise and your story can provide a compelling perspective and, potentially, generate exposure and have a positive impact on your business. Accordingly, we are creating a Speakers Bureau, so that we can ensure that the voice of business is included in important stories and issues being covered and we can refer a member who is willing and prepared to speak to media – on the phone or on camera.
If you are interested in joining our Speakers Bureau, please email Lori Abe, Vice President of Communications & Marketing. Participants will receive media training to review the DOs and DON’Ts of handling press and preparing for any interviews.
We hope you will consider participating and having your business featured.

Laulima & mahalo,
Sherry Menor-McNamara

President & CEO

Export Funding Seminar and State Success in Workplace Safety and Health

The Hawaii Foreign-Trade Zone has partnered with the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Minority Business Development Agency to put on an export funding seminar. On September 26, 11am – 1pm, Greg Moore of the Export Import Bank of the United States will present at Hawaii Foreign Trade Zone #9. Click here for more information.

The State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) has announced that its Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health Division (HIOSH) will reassume responsibility for regulation of Hawaii’s General Industry, one year earlier than scheduled. Beginning in October 2014, HIOSH will regain enforcement authority of the General Industry, a year earlier than scheduled. Click here for more details.

Blue Angels Will Fly High on Sept. 27-28

After the Navy canceled most of the Blue Angels’ 2013 air shows due to sequestration, the Blue Angels are back flying high!

Get ready for the spectacular U.S. Navy Blue Angels to soar over Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam at its “Wings Over the Pacific” Airshow on September 27 and 28. During its five previous visits to Hawaii, the Blue Angels performed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay. This is the first time they will perform at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Captain Stan Keeve, Commander of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, invites you to “witness firsthand the dedication, integrity and professionalism of your service members.”

In addition to the Blue Angels, there will be displays, activities for kids and demonstrations by the U.S. Navy “Leap Frogs” Parachute and F-22 Raptor Demo Teams. While admission and parking are free, parking will be extremely limited, so please carpool to join in the fun!
