President's Message

Aloha Chamber members:

Happy New Year! Your Chamber team is excited about the new year and is readily preparing for a number of exciting initiatives, including Chamber Week, which was launched last year.
The goal of Chamber Week, taking place January 20-23, is to raise awareness about the role Chambers of Commerce play to engage their members in business advocacy efforts and in working together to create a positive business climate.

Throughout the next few weeks, you will be receiving information and the schedule of exciting events happening that week.
Mahalo to our Chamber Week Title Sponsor, The Hawaii Group; media sponsors, Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii News Now; and other Chamber Week sponsors: 1132 Café, Central Pacific Bank, Hawaii Food Manufacturers Association, High Technology Development Corporation and Olsten Staffing and Professional Services, for their wonderful support in helping us spread awareness about this important initiative.
Our team encourages you to get involved during Chamber Week and the legislative session to make 2015 a year of further progress.
Also, as a reminder, we emailed a short survey to our membership to find out what kind of training the Chamber can provide to best serve the needs of your company. Your input is important. Please click here to start the survey. Lastly, our MAC Partnership Conference this Friday is at capacity and “walk ups” or any additional attendees cannot be accommodated. However, following the conference, highlights will be available at

Laulima & mahalo,

New Employment Laws for 2015 - Minimum Wage and ACA Reporting Requirements

2015 brings major changes to doing business in Hawaii and the nation – namely, the increase in minimum wage and new reporting responsibilities under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Effective January 1, 2015, Hawaii’s minimum wage increased from $7.25 to $7.75 per hour and is set to gradually increase each year and reach $10.10 by January 1, 2018. Furthermore, beginning January 1, 2015, tipped employees may be paid 50 cents below the minimum wage. For more information, click here. To download the required new labor law poster, click here

ACA requires employers to comply with new reporting requirements for the 2015 calendar year. These new requirements are governed by two sections of the IRS Code: Section 6055, which applies to health insurers and self-insured employers, and Section 6056, which applies to large employers with 50+ full-time employees. Visit the U.S. Small Business Administration for more information on how to prepare for these new requirements.

Keep Hawaii's Heroes Update

The MAC is continuing to build community awareness about the importance of the military in Hawaii, which is outlined in this recent Honolulu Star-Advertiser editorial by MAC Chair David Carey and Sherry Menor-McNamara.
The MAC's Keep Hawaii's Heroes campaign is making progress toward our goal of collecting 40,000 signatures on our petition. More than 8,000 have been collected thus far. Many thanks to the businesses that have been sending out information about the potential Army downsizing to their employees and partners.
Mahalo to businesses who are making petitions available at their store locations. Look for the petitions at City Mill or a Satellite City Hall location near you!
As we start the new year, the countdown is on to the Army's listening session on January 27, 6:30 p.m. at Hale Koa Hotel. Please save the date and join us to show the Army our Aloha.
We need your help to keep Hawaii's heroes! We have signage, banners, paper petitions and other collateral available. We even have a sample email that you can use to show your support. Visit or email for more information and to get involved.
