President's Message

Aloha Chamber members:

Last month, we reported that the Chamber provided comments to the PUC at a listening session on the proposed merger of Hawaiian Electric and NextEra Energy. Subsequently, we’ve received inquiries from various stakeholders about where the Chamber stands on this important issue. As the leading business advocacy organization in the state, we recognize that tough decisions need to be made, focusing on the long-term and from the big picture standpoint.

After an engaged discussion, the Chamber’s Board of Directors has elected to support the merger. While we recognize the viewpoints of opponents and interveners, in the end, we believe the merger will reduce our state’s reliance on oil through renewable energy efforts, upgrade the power infrastructure, and increase efficiency and use of technology to improve reliability and reduce costs for all consumers, both residential and business ratepayers.

Additionally, investment and expertise from both inside and outside of Hawaii is necessary to improve our power system, while keeping a locally managed team.

Based on the information available and with the focus remaining on the positive impact on costs and service levels to consumers and businesses, we believe the NextEra and Hawaiian Electric merger should proceed. The Chamber will be joining more than 20 organizations, including trades and unions, in support of the merger.

Laulima & mahalo,

Sherry Menor-McNamara

President & CEO

2016 Hawaii Military Partnership Conference

Save the Date: The Military Affairs Council (MAC) is currently coordinating the 2016 Hawaii Military Partnership Conference. The theme of this year’s half-day conference will be “Facing the Future Together” with discussions focused on Hawaii remaining competitive and relevant in the face of shrinking military budgets and innovations in technology that make Hawaii’s historical geographical advantage in the region less significant.

While details are still being confirmed, the upcoming conference will leverage the success from the 2015 iteration by continuing with a plenary session in the morning with a focused discussion about the future of the Asia-Pacific Region. Many of Hawaii’s senior military leaders have been invited to participate. Following the plenary session, attendees will attend breakout sessions to discuss various topics. Cyber security, humanitarian aid/disaster relief and energy are possible topics to be discussed during the sessions.

To close the conference, attendees will attend a luncheon at Washington Place. Governor David Ige and Admiral Harry B. Harris, although not confirmed, have been invited to provide remarks.

Full event details will be distributed in the coming weeks. We hope you will join us.
