President's Message

Aloha Chamber Members:

Pono, Lori, Bianca and I just returned from attending the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives conference in Cincinnati, where approximately 1,000 members from regional and local chambers gathered to share best practices and ideas. I had the opportunity, for the first time, to meet with leaders of Metro City Chambers. Although we may be miles away from these Chambers, the challenges and opportunities we all face are similar, with education, infrastructure and economic development as common themes. As we move forward, your Chamber will continue to collaborate with our counterparts statewide, nationally and internationally, to ensure we bring the highest value to your membership and support our state’s business and economic development.

As mentioned in last week’s e-VOB, the Chamber has launched our monthly Chamber Voice page with Hawaii's leading weekly business publication, Pacific Business News. We look forward to using this as another opportunity to keep our members and the business community engaged on current issues and events. If you missed it, please click here.

Finally, faced with the threat of recent hurricanes, as businesses, we realized how much of an economic impact a direct hit could have had on our state. The Chamber will be participating in a Natural Disaster Economic Recovery Strategy with a focus on small business. We will keep you informed about strategies for mitigating the impact of any natural disaster.

While our island was largely unaffected, Hawaii island, where I am from, suffered damage and is still recovering. Please join in the effort to support our fellow islanders by donating to the Aloha for Puna fund established by member First Hawaiian Bank to assist residents in the Puna region with relief and recovery efforts following storm Iselle.

Laulima & mahalo,

Sherry Menor-McNamara

President & CEO

Apply for Hawaii Export Accelaration Program

The Hawaii Pacific Export Council has just launched the application process for its new program, The Business of Exporting, which seeks to help Hawaii companies looking to export. The application process is from August 18th – September 14th, wherein 15 companies will be selected to participate in this unique program to grow their business.

Exporting and competing on a global level is a crucial step to expanding your business. The Business of Exporting will individually examine each of the 15 companies to determine whether they are ready for export and, if not, how to prepare to take that next step. Click here for more information and to apply.

Establishing Hawaii-Based State Department Agency

The U.S. should take full advantage of Hawaii’s cultural roots and business ties that extend well into the Asia Pacific.

The U.S. Department of Defense has long recognized Hawaii as the bridge to Asia and wisely built a security strategy centered on a strong military presence in the islands. Hawaii has served as home base for the major U.S. military commands in the Pacific since WWII, earning the U.S. unequaled success in strengthening regional security and maintaining peace and stability.

As food for thought, establishing U.S. diplomatic operations in parallel with that of the military’s network could greatly boost U.S. foreign relations in the Pacific, and add diplomacy needed in balancing the security strategy with commerce and trade throughout the Pacific.
