1% Increase in GE Tax Up for Hearing

Session is in full swing and we have been busy monitoring hearing notices and testifying on your behalf to ensure the Voice of Business is heard! One of the primary bills that would negatively impact businesses is SB 2599, proposing a 1% increase to the General Excise tax with additional revenue going towards the Department of Education operations. The Chamber will be opposing this bill, as it would significantly increase costs for businesses, increasing taxes by about $780 million.
We have already testified on over 80 bills, with many of our package bills moving forward. Click here to see bill numbers for our updated 2016 legislative package.

MAC Testifies in Support of Military Bills at the Legislature

With the 2016 Legislative Session in full swing, here are a few of the bills that the Chamber’s Military Affairs Council (MAC) has testified on in support:
HB 2197 RELATING TO A CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT AT POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA ON THE ISLAND OF HAWAII: This measure, if passed, will finance the design and construction of a warehouse at the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA). This facility will provide much needed storage at PTA for the Hawaii Army National Guard, increase training opportunities for the Guard at Pohakuloa and decrease the costs of transporting equipment to the site. Additionally, as a result of this legislation, there will be fewer convoys to the training areas that significantly impact the flow of traffic between Kona and Hilo.
HB 2491 RELATING TO VIETNAM WAR COMMEMORATION: This bill appropriates funding to the State Department of Defense for the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.
