Military's Commitment to Hawaii's Renewable Energy Goals

On July 21st, the Navy held a lease-signing ceremony with Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) for a 20-megawatt solar farm at the West Loch Annex. HECO plans to develop, own and operate the solar facility. The Navy provided 100 acres required for the project in exchange for in-kind considerations from HECO for Navy-owned facilities like Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment, Dennis McGinn, participated in the ceremonial signing with Governor David Ige and Alan Oshima, President and CEO, HECO.

While the state is working on additional renewable energy initiatives with the Department of the Navy, the Army will be breaking ground for the construction of a 50-megawatt biofuel-capable power generation plant at Schofield Barracks in August.

While the Navy project still requires approval from the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), these partnerships are wonderful examples of the military’s commitment towards building momentum for meeting Hawaii’s renewable energy goals.
