Tourism Spending Outpaces Pre-Pandemic Level

(Honolulu Star Advertiser) Visitor arrivals in June to Hawaii were not quite back to the pre-pandemic level; however, overall visitor spending rose by double digits.

Some 842,927 visitors came to the Hawaiian Islands in June 2022, representing an 89% recovery from June 2019, according to preliminary visitor statistics released today by the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT).

Leading Democrats Endorse Term Limits for State Lawmakers

(Civil Beat) Both Vicky Cayetano and Lt. Gov. Josh Green say term limits for state lawmakers is the most urgently needed government reform proposal in Hawaii, but admit it won’t be easy to put term limits into place.

Civil Beat asked the leading Democratic candidates for governor for their highest-priority initiative for ethics and government reform, and both the former lawmaker Green and Cayetano cited term limits as key.

U.S. Rep. Kai Kahele, another top contender in the Democratic primary, declined to be interviewed for this [Civil Beat] series, saying through a spokesman he is dissatisfied with the way Civil Beat has covered the governor’s race.

Hawaii Hospitals Seek Emergency Proclamation to Ease Staffing Shortages

(HawaiiNewsNow) Hospitals in Hawaii grappling with ongoing staffing shortages are asking the governor for an emergency proclamation that would waive state license rules for certified medical professionals. The Healthcare Association of Hawaii said the waiver would only apply to those in good standing.

Hilton Raethel, president and CEO of the organization, said hundreds of healthcare workers are out because of COVID illness or exposure and so are the people who certify new workers. “We have this situation where we have an increased number of applications for healthcare workers, and the very people who process those applications many of those are out sick,” Raethel said.
