President's Message

Aloha Chamber members:

As part of our Manufacturing in Hawaii and Hawaii on the Hill initiatives, I had the honor of touring businesses on Kauai and in Honolulu with U.S. Senator Hirono, thanks to coordination efforts by the Kauai Chamber and High Technology Development Corporation (HTDC).
On Kauai, we visited Kauai Kookie, celebrating their 50th anniversary, Koloa Rum, Salty Wahine and Kauai Coffee. All had an inspiring and unique history as to how they got started.
The Garden Island joined and covered the tour. We also did an interview with KONG radio to discuss Hawaii on the Hill.

On Oahu, we toured businesses related to clean energy, fashion and transportation, with visits to HTDC, The Cut Collective, Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies and UPS.
We also enjoyed lunch at Highway Inn’s Kakaako location, learning about owner Monica Toguchi’s fascinating family history and her story about how their business got its start.
And, last week, our members had an opportunity to observe jewelry in the making with our member, Maui Divers Jewelry

This is how the Chamber serves you, our members. Our advocacy efforts help ensure that these small businesses can continue to stay in business, create and sustain jobs, as well as promote the Hawaii brand to a national and international audience.
We will continue to work towards strengthening our advocacy program, including supporting these two initiatives.

Mahalo Kauai and our member companies for your wonderful hospitality!

Laulima & mahalo,
Sherry Menor-McNamara

Keep Watch: Bad Bills for Business

The following bills are moving or up for hearing. The following bills are moving or up for hearing. Keep an eye out for our Action Alerts so that you can help stop these bills that are harmful to business.
SB 1174 SD 2 HD 2 limits employers' ability to select their own medical examiner in Workers' Comp cases, increasing costs and premiums for employers.

SB 1338 SD 2 HD 1 will end small businesses' ability to keep their transitional health plans rather than buying an ACA plan. This may increase premiums for small businesses.

HB 496 HD 1 SD 1 requires employers to provide paid sick leave for their employees and allow them to carryover up to 80 hours of sick leave to the following year. This bill also requires leave to be provided to employees to care for family members.

Hawaii Welcomes Adjutant General of Hawaii

On April 2, 2015 Brigadier General Arthur “Joe” Logan was confirmed by the Hawaii State Senate as The Adjutant General (TAG) of Hawaii. In this role, BG Logan also serves as the Director of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, State Civil Defense, as well as the Director of Homeland Security for the State of Hawaii.
He previously served as the G3 (Operations) for the Hawaii Army National Guard (HIARNG) and the Chief of Staff and J1 (Personnel) on the Joint Staff under the command of the former TAG, Major General Darryll Wong. With a career that spans more than 30 years in the HIARNG, BG Logan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Hawaii Department of Defense leadership.
The Military Affairs Council has had a long history of working closely with Hawaii National Guard commanders, and we look forward to supporting BG Logan during his tenure as the TAG.
