President's Message

Aloha Chamber members:

The Chamber has just returned from San Francisco and Napa for our Cuisine and Commerce tour with Chef Alan Wong. We certainly created memories and experienced, from a world-renowned chef's perspective, how food promotes commerce (click here to view photos on Facebook).

Our next big initiative is Hawaii on the Hill in partnership with U.S. Senator Hirono and her team. More than 35 companies from various industries are participating to showcase Hawaii at our nation's Capitol. We are ready to bring the Aloha Spirit to the Hill! Yesterday, Senator Hirono and I appeared on the local TV morning show circuit to promote this exciting, productive event.

Finally, when we return from DC, preparations for our July 16 Annual Luncheon – The X’s & O’s in Business and Sports - will be in full gear. Guest speakers include former UH football coach, June Jones, and mega sports agent and inspiration for hit movie Jerry McGuire, Leigh Steinberg. Nationally renowned executive search firm owner, Bob Boudine, will be our featured speaker. In addition, we'll be expressing our heartfelt mahalo to our chair Dennis Francis and welcoming our incoming chair, Gabe Lee.

Space is limited and sponsorships are available, but not for long, so please sign up now to join our biggest event and fundraiser of the year!

Laulima & mahalo,

Sherry Menor-McNamara

President & CEO

Update on Manufacturing Initiative

The Chamber’s Manufacturing Initiative has come a long way since its inception more than a year and a half ago. Since then, we have conducted a number of training seminars on various topics such as exporting, lean manufacturing, energy efficiency and tax credits for manufacturers, as well as hosted networking opportunities for the manufacturing community to learn more about others in their industry.

This was also a successful session for Hawaii’s manufacturing industry – SB1001 passed, which appropriates $2 million to High Technology Development Corporation (HTDC) to administer grants to manufacturing companies to be used towards purchasing of manufacturing equipment, training and other support.

For the coming year, we plan to continue providing seminars on topics to include logistics and packaging, distribution and e-commerce. While continuing with our networking opportunities, we also plan to bring some of these events to the neighbor islands to ensure the growth of manufacturing throughout the state. Check out our Manufacturer’s Portal to stay up-to-date on news and events.

Change of Command within Hawaii's Military Leadership

This week, Hawaii will be bidding a fond farewell to two distinguished military leaders and welcoming two new ones into its military ohana. On May 27th, U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) and U.S. Pacific Fleet (PACFLT) will be hosting a rare joint Change of Command Ceremony at Pearl Harbor.

Admiral Scott H. Swift will be assuming the responsibility as PACFLT Commander from Admiral Harry B. Harris, Jr. Swift was previously assigned as the Navy Staff Director in the Office of the Chief Naval Officer in Washington, D.C.

During the ceremony, ADM Harris will also become the 24th PACOM Commander and assume command from ADM Samuel J. Locklear III. Harris has served as PACFLT Commander since October 16, 2013, while Locklear has served as the Commander at PACOM for the last three years.

On May 28th, Rear Admiral Vincent B. Atkins will assume the responsibility as Commander of the Fourteenth Coast Guard District from Rear Admiral Cari B. Thomas. Thomas has served in this role since 2013 and will next be assigned as the Assistant Commandant for Human Resources (CG-1) in Washington, D.C. Atkins previously served as the Deputy for Operations and Capabilities (CG-DCO-D) in the nation’s capital.

Mahalo to ADM Locklear and RDML Thomas for their leadership and support of Hawaii’s men and women in uniform.
