Welcome to my latest update. Parliament was back for a fortnight before breaking up for the party conferences. This newsletter covers my work in Parliament over those couple of weeks and the latest on my Big Conversation, which started last week and is running until 6th October.

The Big Conversation

I’ve held 11 events so far and I’m really grateful to all the people who’ve come along to share their views. It’s been really useful and will shape my work in the months ahead. But there’s a lot more to come (see sidebar), so do join in. #haveyoursay

Ditch fracking, invest in renewables

At Prime Minister’s Questions, I urged Theresa May to invest in renewable energy rather than backing deeply unpopular carbon-emitting fracking. Watch here.

Tackling low pay

I called on the Chancellor to take action on zero hours contracts and a real living wage, highlighting that we have the lowest hourly pay of any city region. Watch here.

Helping rough sleepers

I challenged Government Ministers to end the cuts that are holding back local services from providing the support needed to help rough sleepers off our streets. Read more.

Walk-in centre and minor injuries unit

I’m pleased that Sheffield CCG have listened to my concerns, and those of many local people, and will rethink proposals to close the walk-in centre on Broad Lane and the minor injuries unit at the Hallamshire. Read more.

l spoke as Shadow Brexit Minister in a Westminster Hall debate on a petition asking for Article 50 to be rescinded if Vote Leave broke electoral laws during the referendum. Read my speech.

Getting Mohamed home

I intervened with the Home Office when a six-year-old constituent was blocked from returning home to his Mum. I was pleased that they granted him emergency travel documents, but it should never have happened. Read more.

Age UK #carecrisis campaign

I’m backing Age UK’s #carecrisis campaign, which is calling on the Government to fix social care, and met with local carers at a special Big Conversation event.

International students

I responded to the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) report on international students and heard evidence for the inquiry by the All Party Parliamentary Group on International Students, which I co-chair, on a sustainable future for international students.

Manor Community Awards

I was pleased to attend Manor Community Awards, organised by the Manor Assembly, recognising the extraordinary contribution of members of the local community.
