Welcome to my December newsletter, covering my activities over the last couple of months (as 'normal service' was suspended in November due to the election). Obviously the election has dominated my time, but this updates you on what I’ve been doing alongside campaigning.

As ever, I’d welcome your feedback, and wish you the very best for Christmas and the New Year.

General Election

I’m really grateful for the support I received last Thursday (full result here), bucking the national trend, and will do all I can to challenge the new Government on the issues that concern you. But I’m deeply disappointed by the overall result and determined that Labour learns the lessons, on which I would welcome your views.

Environment Bill

Before Parliament was dissolved, I challenged the Environment Minister on the weakness of the proposed Environment Bill with its refusal to guarantee environmental protection. More here.

High-rise Housing

As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Students, I wrote to the Government and spoke with our Council seeking reassurances on flammable cladding after the fire in a Bolton student housing complex. More here.

Parliament Trip

My annual constituency visit to Parliament is on Monday 27th April, which includes a tour of Parliament and a Q&A session with me. More information and register here.

Climate Crisis

I took part in a Hope for the Future panel discussion on the role of Parliament in tackling climate change and joined youth climate strikers on their march in November.

Milad Un Nabi

I spoke at the Milad Un Nabi events at the Medina Masjid and Jamia Masjid to mark the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

School Streets

I joined pupils, parents and teachers from Carterknowle and Holt House Schools for the trial closure of Bannerdale Road during drop-off and pick-up times to assess the impact on air quality and road safety. More here.

Supporting University Staff

I backed university staff in their strike over pensions, casual contracts, workload and gender pay parity, speaking at their rally in Barker’s Pool.

Supporting Deliveroo Drivers

I met with the South Yorkshire Courier Network to support their campaign for better pay and conditions as Deliveroo drivers, and am taking their concerns up with the company.

I spoke at an event organised by the local women’s group, Sisters4Kashmir, and participated in an election hustings on the situation in Kashmir.

Voter ID

Before the election, I wrote to the Government to oppose their proposals for new voter ID laws which I believe will discourage participation in elections.

Sign Language Funding

I wrote to the Education Secretary to highlight the lack of funding to support sign language courses, which was raised with me in the Big Conversation.

21 Years of Zest

I spoke on the achievements of Zest at a 21st birthday event with trustees, staff and users of the centre which serves communities in Netherthorpe, Upperthorpe and Langsett.

Other Issues

I also wrote to the Government about the situation in Chile, the treatment of Uighur Muslims in China, spousal visa applications and PIP awards letters.
