Welcome to my first newsletter of the new year, covering my activities since December. I’ve also included a link to my views on the election result and Labour's leadership election, on which I’d really welcome your thoughts.

Brexit


Boris Johnson gained approval of his Withdrawal Agreement Bill just before the Christmas recess, and I led for Labour in challenging it during more detailed consideration this month. More here.

Raising young people's voices


I used the debate on the Queen’s Speech to press concerns raised by local school students during my Big Conversation, particularly on school funding and mental health. More here.

Labour Leadership


I set out my views on the election and my reasons for backing Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner in the Labour leadership elections in this blogpost. Do let me have your views.

Proportional Representation


I chaired the first meeting of the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform since the election, in which we agreed to seek commitments from Labour leadership candidates on PR.

Securing regional funding


I took my campaign to ensure South Yorkshire doesn’t lose out on regional funding for economic development to the BBC’s ‘Sunday Politics’. Watch my comments here.

Assisted Dying


I was re-elected Vice-Chair of the All-Party Group on Choice at the End of Life at the AGM, where we also discussed our campaign for a on the impact of the current law's impact.

No 'backsliding' on the environment


I challenged the Government on keeping pace with ambitious EU plans on environmental standards and sustainable production. More here.

Local Policing


As part of my regular liaison with local police, I met the new inspector heading neighbourhood policing in Manor and Wybourn. Do get in touch with me on any policing issues.

Casualisation of work


I’ve previously raised casualisation of work, and this week joined a launch of a new UCU report on increasing use of casual contracts in universities.

Holocaust Memorial Day


I signed the Book of Commitment in advance of Holocaust Memorial Day next Monday, 27th January, for which events in Sheffield will be part of national campaign to ‘Stand Together’.

Arts and Culture funding


I challenged the Government on the underfunding of arts and culture, and the inequality between London and the regions – something I’ve been pressing since 2014. More here.

Palestinian twinning


I hosted a meeting on plans to twin Sheffield with the West Bank city of Nablus, which I visited in 2017 (more here). Do get in touch if you’re interested.

Heritage Fair


I met with local heritage groups at Sheffield Heritage Fair, held to celebrate and uncover much about our rich history.

Parliament trip


My annual constituency visit to Parliament is on Monday 27th April, which includes a tour of Parliament and a Q&A session with me. More information and register here.

Universities


I was re-elected Chair of the All-Party Group for International Students and Secretary of All-Party Group for Universities at their AGMs, and held one of my regular meetings with Hallam’s Vice-Chancellor.

Community notices


There is funding available for community groups from People’s Postcode Lottery, info here, closing 4th Feb. 

This Girl Can have also launched their Community Fund for getting women active, info here, closing 25th Feb.

WiCAT – who support women in construction and similar trades – AGM on Tues 4th Feb, 5.30pm. Welcomes volunteers or people for the Management Committee – contact Mandy for more.

The HelpUsHelp website is a great guide on how to support rough sleepers and street beggars through charities working with them.


Fundraising clothes swap extravaganza with food and music to raise money for the Garden of Unity in Palestine, 28th Feb. More here.
