Keeping in touch
March 2021

As we mark a year since the first lockdown, Covid-19 still dominates much of my time and Parliament continues to work remotely. Over this month we've seen the Budget, a controversial policing and sentencing Bill, and I've been pressing Ministers on several issues. As ever I'd welcome your feedback and if you know of anyone needing support, ask them to get in touch. Paul

Health and Care funding

Responding to the Budget I spoke on how 10 years of underfunding the NHS left us unprepared for the pandemic, the lack of action on social care, and key workers' pay - more here.
Sheffield-Manchester Airport link

I co-ordinated a letter from Sheffield's Labour MPs calling on the Government to abandon plans to scrap the direct rail link between Sheffield and Manchester airport - more here.

Supporting Ashiana - against domestic abuse

I hosted an online International Women's Day event, with Unite and Hallam SU, to support local charity Ashiana. My fundraiser is still open and you can donate here.

End gambling promotion in football

I took part in The Big Step, a campaign to end the links between football and the gambling industry, organised by Gambling with Lives - who I arranged to meet with Labour's Shadow Culture Secretary.

Equal votes

I met with constituents as part of the Make Votes Matter Lobby for proportional representation, which I support.

Challenging the Tories Brexit deal

I challenged Ministers on the impact the Brexit deal is having on the UK, highlighting the experience of local companies, and wrote this article for Politics Home.
Covid-19 meetings

I meet regularly with Ministers and locally with the Hospital Trust, the Clinical Commissioning Group, the Director of Public Health and the Council. Do get in touch on anything you'd like me to raise.

Cladding & building safety scandal

In a debate on interim fire safety costs, I again urged Ministers to resolve this scandal at no cost to leaseholders (see here) and held a meeting for those affected with Council leader Bob Johnson.

Supporting students

I challenged the Chancellor on the Government's failure to support students during the pandemic, and spoke at a conference organised by Sheffield Hallam students.

Young Carers Action Day

I spoke at a national conference, making the case for better support for young carers and backed the launch of this petition supported by Sheffield Young Carers, of which I am Patron.

Climate emergency

I've met with different groups in Sheffield campaigning on the climate crisis as well as preparations for November's COP26, on which I wrote to its President Alok Sharma.

Uyghur Muslims' persecution

I pressed the Foreign Secretary for stronger action on China's treatment of the Uyghur Muslims, highlighting the need to stop UK companies profiting from forced labour.

Immigration detention

I met with Detention Action and other groups with which I've worked on indefinite detention (more here) and joined a lobby against the use of Napier Barracks and Penally camp for asylum seekers.

University research

I participated in a Royal Society pairing scheme and met with Universities UK on proposed cuts to research and development funding.
