Parliament goes into recess this week with the Government in chaos over the lifting of Covid restrictions as infection increases alarmingly - on which I've challenged Ministers throughout the month. Locally, more venues have been signing up to my campaign against sexual harassment in the hospitality sector (more here). I'd welcome your feedback and do get in touch if you need any help - my office will remain open remotely throughout the summer.

Covid chaos

I challenged Health Secretary Sajid Javid on the reckless decision to abandon the use of masks while lifting Covid restrictions with infection and hospitalisation rates are soaring. Read more and watch our exchanges here and here.
Green steel production

I urged Climate Change Ministers to follow other countries and back hydrogen-based steel making pilots to manufacture steel in a greener way. Read more and watch our exchange here.

'Free Speech' Bill

I spoke in the Second Reading of the Higher Education Bill which the Conservatives are using to stoke up culture wars to distract from more important issues. Read more here.

Extending student visas

Along with CBI President and APPG for International Students Co-Chair Lord Bilimoria, I pressed Ministers successfully to update their visa guidance to allow for the phased entry of international students this autumn. Read more here.

Immigration inquiries

I've joined sessions of the APPG on Migration inquiry on the impact of new immigration rules on employers and workers, and the APPG for Immigration Detention's inquiry into the use of military barracks.

Post-Brexit trade

The UK Trade and Business Commission, of which I'm a member, held sessions this month on digital trade and data sharing, the UK-Australia Trade Deal and the creative industries.

International Aid

I met with campaigners from CAFOD before joining MPs from across parties in trying unsuccessfully to reverse the Government's cut to the aid budget.

Parliamentary Boundary Review

The Boundary Commission have published proposals to reduce the size of Sheffield Central by transferring Manor Castle ward to Sheffield Heeley. I've concerns about the proposal but would welcome your views by 28th July.

Zimbabwe deportation

After receiving reports of the deportation of Zimbabwean asylum seekers, I co-ordinated a letter to the Home Secretary from Sheffield MPs (more here) and took action with colleagues in the APPG on Refugees.

Big Conversation

This year's Big Conversation will be different. It will take place over three months, rather than three weeks, and reach out to more people on doorsteps across the constituency. I'll circulate full details in August.

EU Settled Status

I secured an Urgent Question forcing the Immigration Minister to Parliament where I called on him to extend the EUSS deadline to avoid a "Windrush-style scandal". Read more here and listen to my comments on Radio 4 here.

Nationality and Borders Bill

I spoke in Parliament opposing the Bill, on which I met with refugee charities and spoke at an APPG on Migration Webinar on how government plans conflict with Global Migration Compact. Watch my speech here.

Cladding and fire safety

I met with local leaseholders caught up in the building safety scandal and spoke again in Parliament on the issue, highlighting the emotional and financial strain they are facing. Read more here.

Yemen

I pressed the Foreign Secretary to work more strongly with the international community to bring an end to the war in Yemen.
