The day after my last newsletter Russia invaded Ukraine with devastating consequences which have obviously dominated our politics. Hundreds of constituents have written to me about the crisis and I've been taking up your concerns - and promoting ways of supporting the Ukrainian people. As ever, I'd welcome your views on this and the other things I've been doing this month.

Solidarity with Ukraine

I co-ordinated a statement from Sheffield's Labour MPs to a local rally supporting Ukraine (see here) and sent a message of solidarity to the Ukrainian Parliament (above) from the people of Sheffield. I've backed sanctions and the supply of arms to Ukraine and promoted practical ways to support its people (see here).

Supporting Ukrainian refugees

I've been appalled at the Government's slow and weak response to the refugee crisis, and pressed Priti Patel (see here) and Michael Gove (see here) for further and faster action - and I've been liaising with the Council and City of Sanctuary on our local response.

Gambling addiction

I secured an Adjournment Debate on the coroner's inquest into the suicide of my constituent Jack Ritchie as a result of his gambling addiction - pressing for far-reaching reform - and was elected as a Vice-Chair of the Gambling Related Harms All Party Group (more here).

Building safety and mental health

I highlighted the impact the building safety crisis is having on the mental health of leaseholders, drawing on a report from the University of Sheffield, in a debate on the remediation of buildings (more here).

Housing

I attended a Shelter event in Parliament to support their campaign for everyone to have access to a safe and affordable home - and met locally with the City Council to share my concerns about the housing repairs service.

Disability benefits

Along with 47 other MPs I wrote to the Work and Pensions Secretary backing the 'disability Benefits Without the Fight' campaign for applicants for Personal Independence Payments (PIP) to be assessed by people who are familiar with their health condition (more here).

Students and universities

I challenged the Education Secretary on the Government's response to the Augar Review of post-18 education and funding, which increases costs to students and freezes university funding (watch our exchange here) - and I was re-elected as the Secretary of the All-Party Group for Universities.

Royal Society Pairing

I was pleased to host Dr Candice Majewski from the University of Sheffield through the Royal Society Pairing Scheme which aims to help politicians and research scientists understand each other's work. More about the programme here.

P&O sackings

I joined a protest outside Parliament against the appalling action of P&O in dismissing their entire workforce and backed an emergency motion Labour brought to the Commons last Monday.

Nationality and Borders Bill

Yesterday I voted to back all 14 amendments from the House of Lords, which aimed to limit the worst aspects of this appalling Bill, but the Government used their majority to defeat them all (read more about my work on the Bill here).

Opposing fracking

I called on the Government to make sure that the energy crisis resulting from Putin's war in Ukraine is not used to reopen the discredited case for fracking (see here).

Student housing

I organised a meeting of the All-Party Group for Students, which I chair, to consider the issues arising from the Living Black report and the Accommodation Costs Survey bringing together students and parliamentarians.

Students and universities

I challenged the Education Secretary on the Government's response to the Augar Review of post-18 education and funding, which increases costs to students and freezes university funding (watch our exchange here) - and I was re-elected as the Secretary of the All-Party Group for Universities.
