Welcome to my May newsletter. School cuts, regional development and local policing are some of the issues I’ve raised over the last month. I’ve also been campaigning for Thursday’s European elections (read more here). As ever, I’d welcome your feedback.

The failed cross-party talks have dominated the last month, and I challenged Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay on Ministers unwillingness to move on key issues. I also met with EU diplomats and with German MPs on the issue.

Regional Funding

In a Parliamentary debate, I demanded that the Government commits to providing South Yorkshire with funding equivalent to the money we would have received from the EU.

School Cuts

When drawn for a PMQ, which only happens rarely, I challenged the Prime Minister on the devastating effects of cuts to Sheffield schools – see here.

BAME Attainment Gap

I hosted an event with SOAS Director Baroness Valerie Amos and NUS Vice-President Amatey Doku to launch a new UUK/NUS report, challenging universities to address the BAME Attainment gap.

Sheffield College

Following my appeal for better FE funding last month, I met with College leaders and governors to discuss their work, and with students as part of the Love Our Colleges campaign.

Casework issues raised with me this month include housing repairs, immigration and benefits cases, and poor broadband provision. Contact my office if you have a problem.

Fire Safety

I met South Yorkshire firefighters to hear their concerns about the dangers of cuts to the local fire service and back their campaign for proper funding.

International Students

I tabled an amendment to the Immigration Bill with former Universities Minister Jo Johnson MP to change rules limiting international student recruitment – more here.

Transport for the North

I joined MPs from across parties in pressing the Chancellor for the funding needed for Transport for the North’s Strategic Plan – more here.

My Mail Bag

The top issue I was contacted about this month (excluding Brexit!) was abortion reform in N. Ireland.

I joined Sheffield ME and Fibromyalgia Group as part of an international event to campaign for more research and improved medical training to enhance understanding of ME.

Violent Crime

I joined a community march in Sharrow against knife crime, organised by Mums United, and met with Manor & Castle Development Trust to discuss their community-led response to violent crime.
Local Policing

I met with South Yorkshire Police & Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable to discuss the review of community policing, caught up with Sheffield’s Chief Supt. on local issues, and joined a briefing with the city centre police team.

Vacancy in my Team

There is the opportunity to join my team as a Constituency Assistant, based in my Sheffield office. Deadline Monday 1st July – details here.

Meeting NHS CCG

I met with the Sheffield NHS Clinical Commissioning Group to discuss the NHS England review, which was initiated at the request of Sheffield MPs.

Having followed the Blades for more than 50 years, I couldn’t miss the chance to celebrate our return to the Premiership during Prime Minister’s Questions – watch here!

Palestinian Foreign Minister

I met with the Palestinian Foreign Minister with other members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Palestine to discuss the current situation.

Backing Broomhall Girls Group

Broomhall Girls Youth Group are shortlisted to receive money from Tesco’s community fund – vote for them at checkouts in Tesco stores.

Somaliland Independence

I spoke at an event organised by the APPG on Somaliland celebrating their independence day and backing calls for international recognition of the country.
Video Games Industry

I visited Hallam University’s world-leading games development and teaching facilities and met with industry body UKIE to discuss the sector’s importance to Sheffield.
