Parliament only met for five days before Boris Johnson shut us down, but it was a busy week. As well as speaking for Labour on the Bill to block ‘no deal’ Brexit, I welcomed a victory for my seven-year campaign to change visa rules for international students and spoke on Kashmir. Now I’m in the middle of my Big Conversation. More on all of this below and, as ever, I’d welcome your feedback.

Stopping 'no deal' Brexit

I led for Labour at the Committee Stage of the successful Bill which requires Boris Johnson to seek an extension of Article 50 if there is no Brexit deal, and set out the risk to Sheffield in this article in the Star.

Progress on International Students

In agreeing to a new post-study work visa for international students, the Government have accepted a key recommendation of the cross-party inquiry I led last year, but need to go further. Read more here.

Defending Citizens' Rights

I’ve continued to challenge the Government on securing EU Citizens’ Rights, on which they sneaked out changes just before Parliament was suspended. More here.

Challenging Boris Johnson

I was allocated a question for Johnson's first PMQs which I used to challenge him on his dishonesty over Brexit negotiations. Watch it here.

Big Conversation

I’m almost halfway through the Big Conversation, and have had really useful discussions. This has included meetings on housing, climate change and Brexit, as well as ones with women, school students, faith leaders and small businesses. I've also held one-to-one conversations at drop-in events and on doorsteps across the constituency.

There are many more events coming up. Do join in and have your say; the full programme is here.

Protecting Disability Rights

I spoke at an event organised by Disability Rights UK and UNISON on the risks to the rights of people with disabilities of leaving the EU.

Action on Pavement Parking

I welcomed the Transport Select Committee report, which I submitted evidence to, which recommended immediate Government measures and legislative change. More here.

Calling for action on Kashmir

On the first day back after the summer recess, I pressed the Foreign Secretary to take stronger action to press for the reinstatement of Kashmir’s special status and seek a lasting settlement. Read more here.

Big Conversation Survey

If you haven't already, I would appreciate if you could fill out my short online survey to get constituents’ views. Just click here to complete it and let me know your priorities.

At Labour Conference

As I send this out, I’m at Labour’s annual Party conference, where I’ve been speaking on the NHS post-Brexit, Labour's approach to immigration, EU Citizens' Rights, at a Business Forum and at a Labour for a Public Vote event.

Toilet Twinning

As part of Sheffield Soroptomists campaign on hygiene and sanitation, one of the toilets in my office has been ‘twinned’ with a toilet in the Central African Republic.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

I met with the Chair of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust to discuss developments in their services, and preparations for a ‘no deal’ Brexit.

HS2 review

After the Government announced a review of HS2, I challenged the Minister to ensure that the effect on the northern economy is properly considered.

Post-18 Education

I met with Sheffield College’s Principal and with Sheffield Hallam University’s Vice-Chancellor, after meeting Sheffield University’s Vice-Chancellor last month, to discuss current issues facing FE and HE.

Mail Bag

Brexit has dominated again, but other top topics for emails from constituents have been animal welfare, HS2 and Boris Johnson's prorogation of Parliament.

Madina Masjid

I went along to the Madina Masjid’s open day to support the initiative and talk to visitors.
