Welcome to my February newsletter, covering my activities over the last month. There’s also details of my International Women’s Day charity fundraiser next week, at which you’d be very welcome. As ever, let me have your views on these or other issues.

Brexit - the next stage

We left the EU on 31st January but Brexit is far from done, and my job as a Shadow Brexit Minister continues. I responded to the Foreign Secretary for Labour on the negotiations ahead. More here.

Challenging low pay

I joined Deliveroo drivers on a picket of Wagamama, supporting their campaign for better pay and working conditions. More here.

Regulating debt collection

I joined a cross-party group of senior MPs in writing to the Justice Secretary calling for proper regulation of bailiffs. More here.

Supporting Young Carers

On Young Carer’s Awareness Day, I announced the launch of a new All-Party Parliamentary Group for Young Carers which I’m setting up with the Carers’ Trust. More here.

Fire safety

I spoke in two debates about fire safety, calling for independent building regulation and pressing the Government to do more to address flammable cladding on high-rise buildings.

Special Educational Needs

In a Parliamentary debate on SEND, I called for better resourcing overall as well as consistency in identifying and supporting specific autistic conditions such as pathological demand avoidance.

Supporting UCU strike

I joined UCU members on the first day of their strike action last week, to give my support to their campaign on pay, pensions and working conditions.

Student Mental Health

Continuing my work on tackling rising student mental health problems, I chaired an All-Party Parliamentary Students Group meeting on the new University Mental Health Charter. More here.

Proportional Representation

I chaired the AGM of the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform, highlighting that the Tories secured a huge Parliamentary majority with only 43% of the vote in December. More here.

Bus services

I called for proper investment in bus services, to improve provision and reduce carbon emissions, during a debate on decarbonising transport. More here.

Join me on International Women's Day

My annual IWD film screening to raise funds for the Snowdrop Project, supporting trafficked women, is on Thurs 5th March. ‘On the Basis of Sex’ tells the story of US Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her struggle for gender equality. More here

Condemning Trump's 'Peace Plan'

I challenged the Government to reject Trump’s ‘deal’, as it includes illegal settlements in the West Bank which prevent an effective state of Palestine. More here.

Trade deal transparency

Lots of people have written with concerns over the proposed US trade deal and, as Shadow Brexit Minister, I called for the release of suppressed reports on the impact of proposed deals. More here.

Labour leadership

I welcomed Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner to speak at events in Sheffield and am pleased they’ve been strongly backed by my local party members. Read my views here.

United Synagogue

I joined representatives of the United Synagogue, of which Sheffield’s Kingfield Synagogue is a member, at a reception to celebrate their 150th Anniversary.

Mercia School

Pupils at Mercia School had lots of great questions when I visited them in January, including the impact of Brexit and concerns on the climate emergency.

Broadband black spots

I pressed the Government to tackle broadband ‘black spots’ where internet access is not being upgraded, after raising specific constituents’ problems with BT Broadband.
