Summer is here!
 
Greetings from Vasa, Finland. Summer is finally here but oh how we had to wait this year for it to finally arrive. It's here now though, so most Finns are packing their bags and heading out to their summer cottages located somewhere in the Finnish archipelago to enjoy the few weeks of summer we do have and of course, enjoy some nice, hot saunas.

It has been a really busy spring with us developing release 2015-R2 and working with a lot of different projects for our clients. 2015-R2 was released mid-April and we are now half way through 2015-R3 which will be released October 1st. Both releases are full of new standard functionality and improvements which we hope our clients will benefit from.

As you can read in this newsletter, our clients are also busy and doing really well and we couldn't be happier for them! That is why this newsletter has more focus on them than us.

So please, take a few minutes to have a read through and see what we and our clients are up to.

Red Funnel ordered a new fast ferry - Red Jet 6
Red Funnel are building a brand new fast ferry - Red Jet 6. She will be built in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, the first vessel of her kind to be built in the UK for 15 years.

The 40m high-speed catamaran will be delivered summer 2016.

Kevin George, Red Funnel’s CEO commented “From the outset, Shemara Refit shared our vison to bring fast ferry construction back to the UK and particularly to Cowes on the Isle of Wight where the specialist aluminium fabrication skills and yard facilities still exist. The fact they could do this at a competitive price is a credit to the team at Shemara. The Red Jet 6 contract will bring significant inward investment to underpin the Island’s marine manufacturing sector and help to further grow the Isle of Wight economy..."

Marine Atlantic opens new terminal building in North Sydney
Marine Atlantic has opened their brand new terminal building in North Sydney. It is double in size compared to the old terminal and offers features like lounge areas, free Wi-Fi throughout the building, spacious seating areas etc.

In the new terminal there are lounge areas for both commercial drivers and private passengers - an area where the passengers are given the opportunity to relax for a while when waiting to board the ferry.


To access the lounge area, customers have to scan their boarding card and once validated they are provided access through turnstiles. Only passengers with valid bookings (created in BOOKIT) will be permitted access the lounge area. The barcode scanners which were integrated into the turnstiles were delivered by a California based company called Alvarado.

Marine Atlantic have been using BOOKIT since 2007 and are using Hogia Terminal Management System since beginning of 2015.
Second LNG ferry ordered
Rederi Gotland Ab has placed an order for a second LNG ship from the Chinese dockyard GSI (Guangzhou Shipyard International Co Ltd). The ferry will be a sister ship to the first LNG ship Rederi Gotland Ab ordered a few months back.

The first ship will be delivered in 2017 and the second one in 2018.

The first ship will be used by Destination Gotland and be operating on the Visby to Nynäshamn route but it is not yet decided which route this second ship will operate on.


Destination Gotland have been using BOOKIT since 1994.
New routes for Swedish Orient Line
Swedish Orient Line has secured even more routes, this is the second time this year that they are expanding their business.

The new routes are:
- Trelleborg - Hanko and return, through a cooperation with Stena Line
- Travemünde - Hanko and return, through a cooperation with TT-Line
- Paldiski - Rostock and return, through a cooperation with Navirail.




SOL Continent Line is currently offering four ferry services, calling 13 ports and with a total of 28 weekly departures on routes in Northern Europe.

Serco NorthLink has been awarded the Taste our Best award. Taste our Best is a joint initiative between VisitScotland and the Scottish Government. Each ship in the NorthLink fleet has recently been visited by VisitScotland to gauge the extent of the use of local food and drink on its menus.

Bay Ferries has a new ferry which will be operating on the Saint John to Digby route. The ship, currently temporarily known as the Canada 2014, is the former Greek-flagged Blue Star Ithaki.

The length is 124m and can take 1 317 passengers and 245 cars. Power is supplied by four Wärtsilä NSD 9L32 engines. Before making her commercial debut the ship is being modified in Canada to meet Canadian rules for shipping.

Marine Atlantic has purchased two passenger ferries from Stena; Blue Puttees and Highlanders to continue serving customers travelling between Port aux Basques in New Foundland and Labrador and North Sydney in Nova Scotia.

The BOOKIT API is growing
We have, since 2007 been focusing on our BOOKIT API (Application Programming Interface) as we realise that integrations are the way forward.

Today our API is used, by our clients, for a number of things. To name just a few:
- Self service kiosks
- Check-in application on tablet computer
- Booking sites and apps
- Integrations to finance systems
- Integrations to passenger gates

We are now setting even more focus on our BOOKIT API and during Q1 and Q2 we have:
- added even more calls and functionality which has expanded the scope for the API. This means that our API can be used to do even more.
- simplified certain aspects of the way the API works in order to make it more user friendly, consistent and streamlined.


The BOOKIT API has proven to be an important part of the BOOKIT product family and we will continue to improve and expand it as the need of integrations from our clients and from the market as a whole continues to grow.

Welcome Andreas!
Andreas Kastrén has been working as a temp on the support team since April 2015 and he has now been offered a full time position as Account Manager which he has accepted.

We are happy that he has chosen to join our HFS-team!
Hogia supplies real time passenger information in Stockholm
Public transport company Keolis, whose services are used by Stockholm Public Transport among others, invest in a real time passenger information system provided by Hogia Public Transport Systems.

This new system comes in the form of an application which is installed in all busses. The application gives real time information about deviations en route and also suggests possible solutions.

"Hogia's system
continuously distributes information about timetables, possible deviations and changes during the passenger's journey, for example bus stops that are changed, a journey has to make an additional stop and delays. With this service we hope to contribute to make the public transport more efficient" says Bengt Carlsson, Business Developer at Hogia Public Transport Systems.

BOOKIT News
We are busy with writing the next release, 2015-R3 and it will be made available October 1st.

The release is full with new standard development which might be of interest to our clients. The testing phase starts September 1st.

The current release, 2015-R2 has been out for a couple of months and if you are interested in taking it, please contact your Account Manager.



 
BOOKIT Conference
The BOOKIT Conference is getting closer and there are still a few spots available. The conference will be held in Stenungsund, home town of the Hogia group September 7 -9.
