PORTO ALEGRE WELCOMES THE EXECUTIVE BUREAU MEMBERS OF UCLG

PORTO  Alegre hosted more than 200 representatives of local and regional governments from over 35 countries in the UCLG Executive Bureau meetings, which took place from 10-12 June 2015. The meetings focused on the Post-2015 development programme, the New Urban Agenda of Habitat III and the Financing for Sustainable Development as well as the new international framework for the fight against climate change (COP21).

A PROMISING FIRST TRAINING WORKSHOP WITH CIFAL JEJU
fruitful training workshop on “Developing Capacities in Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in Asia-Pacific” was held from 18-22 May in Seogwipo, Jeju – an island of sky and sea, and home to warm and hospitable people. 20 participants from 10 countries, including East Timor, learned from resource persons and from one another about the role of local governments and other actors in reducing and managing disaster risks and adapting to climate change.

UCLG ASPAC SECRETARY GENERAL AT THE 10TH JEJU FORUM, 20-22 MAY 2015

THERE is much to learn from Jeju Island in the Republic of Korea and we are fortunate that it warmly welcomes visitors. Richly blessed by Mother Nature and cherished by its citizens, it was chosen in 2011 as one of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature” and was also designated as the “Island of World Peace” in 2005. The harmonious co-existence of nature and the people in Jeju continuously inspires the region and beyond through the Jeju Forum.

INTEGRATED RESOURCE RECOVERY CENTRE: THE FIRST PROJECT ON SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT WITH UNESCAP
UCLG ASPAC and UNESCAP recently visited Jambi City and Malang Regency to follow up the result of the baseline survey on establishing the Integrated Resource Recovery Centre (IRRCs) and developing city-wide solid waste strategies that are pro-poor, low-carbon and financially viable of four potential locations in Indonesia. Based on the result, Jambi City and Malang Regency were selected to host the first pilot project implemented by UNESCAP and UCLG ASPAC in Indonesia.

NATIONAL URBAN FORUM: TOWARDS INDONESIA NEW URBAN AGENDA

THE Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC delivered remarks at the National Urban Forum: Towards Indonesia New Urban Agenda held in Jakarta on 28 May 2015. Present at the Mayors’ Session were Tri Rismaharini, Mayor of Surabaya and Muhidin, Mayor of Banjarmasin who each shared their achievements on sustainable development.

ENCYNET INITIATIVE

THE World Local Government Summit Forum having been held in Jeju during the IUCN World Conservation Congress Jeju 2012, emphasized that the roles and actions of the world’s local governments have become more important than any other times, to come up with the solutions responding to environmental issues and for conservation of the environment. Accordingly, the world’s local governments strongly supported the establishment of Cyber Environment Network of World Local Governments.

THE 2nd South Asian Cities Summit 2015, held in New Delhi on 22-23 May, was a high profile gathering of Ministers, Mayors, Commissioners, CEOs, senior local government officials from South Asian countries and cities, as well as various institutions working  in  the  area  of  Smart  and Sustainable  Cities  in  the sub-region.

BANDA  Aceh’s Mayor Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal, was invited to be one of the speakers at the Global Urban Consultation, co-hosted and supported by the World Humanitarian Summit (WHS), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), UN-HABITAT, Global Communities, International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Department for International Development (DFID), and Global Communities from 22-23 June 2015 in Barcelona, Spain.

THE “Culture 21 Actions” toolkit providing guidance for cities aiming to evaluate, design and implement cultural policies contributing to sustainable development was adopted at the first UCLG’s Culture Summit, held in Bilbao, Spain on 18-20 March 2015 under the title “Culture and Sustainable Cities.”

VICE MAYOR OF SEOUL CITY GOVERNMENT MET DKI JAKARTA GOVERNOR

ON Friday 5 June 2015, came to Jakarta and paid a courtesy visit to DKI Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja “Ahok” Purnama in the Jakarta City Hall. Before meeting with Jakarta Governor Ahok, he briefly met UCLG ASPAC’s Secretary General in the City Hall.

WE would like to congratulate Mayor Yasutomo Suzuki for being elected for the third time to represent the Hamamatsu people. Congratulations! The current Mayor won with almost 4 times more votes than the rival candidate and was thus elected for a third term.
