Empowering Local Bodies Key to Building Smart Cities

UCLG ASPAC and All-India Institute of Local Self Government successfully held the 3rd South Asian Cities Summit 2016 - Smart Cities – Aspirations and Challenges. The event was graced by the Chief Guest and House Speaker, Lok Sabha, who set the tone of the conference in her address. Reflecting on city planning, she mentioned that it is worthy to look back on the development of India’s ancient cities which show that planning is not a new trend. See our report here.

UCLG ASPAC has been working on the mission to enhance inclusive LED, build green and sustainable business and local government capacity in promoting Small and Medium Enterprise among ASEAN countries and strengthening entrepreneurship within ASEAN. As one of its efforts to enliven the mission, UCLG ASPAC, in collaboration with OXFAM GB, WIEGO, Rockefeller Foundation and other partner, has organized “The Inclusive Economies in Cities in South East Asia workshop” in Bangkok on 10-11th May. DELGOSEA Council Meeting: Networking and Action Plan Sharing

DELGOSEA Council once again had its annual network meeting on May 16 – 17, 2016, in Bangkok, Thailand. As the first meeting this year, DELGOSEA connected the network in updated action plan as well as decentralization development amongst its members. During this meeting, Laos conveyed their intention to visit one of Thailand’s municipalities to learn about solid waste management to be replicated in Vientianne. UCLG ASPAC and KAS already agreed to support this by providing resources. The plan was set for a workshop discussing Solid Waste, Culture and Bottom-Up Good Governance in October 2016. UCLG Executive Bureau Meeting: Sustainable Agendas for All

Policy Forum on Development

UCLG held its annual Executive Bureau meeting and other parallel events from 25 to 28 May 2016 in Kazan, Russia. During this 4-day meeting, several sessions were set for policy debate on Sustainable Cities and Living Together and other sessions for various working committees, including Urban Strategic Planning, Statutory Affairs and Financial Management Committee. For the core executive bureau sessions, this meeting discussed Habitat III process along with the policy positions. In the Special Focus Sessions, this meeting addressed the organization’s strategy for 2016 – 2022 as well as the upcoming UCLG Congress in Bogota. Find out more here.

ADLG: Strengthening Local Government Toward Democracy in Pakistan

ON 30 April 2016, local governments and their associations in Pakistan celebrated a move in democratic sphere with the launch of National Local Governments Association, namely “Association for Development of Local Governance” (ADLG).

ADLG is established as alliance of 4 provincial local councils associations of 4 provinces: Balochistan, KP, Sindh and Punjab, two of which are currently members of UCLG ASPAC. Members of the boards of governors of all 4 provincial associations, the past and present elected representatives of local governments, media and civil society representatives attended this ceremony.
