OUR PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS GO OUT TO NEPAL

As part of the international community, the Executive Bureau of UCLG ASPAC has recently released the statement during the meeting held in Makati to facilitate the support of members for immediate rescue and relief, to support the reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in the long-term, and to continue building strong local government action in disaster mitigation, prevention, recovery through capacity building, in line with the Sendai Framework of Action.

3RD UN WORLD CONFERENCE ON DISASTER RISK REDUCTION (3WCDRR)

Banda Aceh Mayor, Ms. Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal on behalf of cities and local governments all over the world addressed to member states and thousands of other participants. She stated that “local authorities are increasingly taking the initiative to enhance their preparedness and capacities to be able to prevent losses and provide an effective and immediate response.”

2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Secretary General hoped that the Conference would be useful to develop the future roadmap of local governments particularly in Bangladesh and promote creative, effective and innovative local self-governments to serve the community better. She congratulated MAN for their ongoing and positive progress in strengthening the capacity of local governments in the whole country.

STUDY OF LOCAL AUTHORITY ASSOCIATIONS IN EU PARTNER COUNTRIES IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION

Four research questions are highlighted in the study, which are level of representation, influence capacity to advocate policies, communication ability, and institutional recognition, as well as internal management situation. The questions are expected to deliver performance overview and the key areas of improvement. The data is collected based on the ONLINE SURVEY, using the self-assessment tools to encourage the associations to analyze their current level as well as the obstacles and strategies to overcome them.

ASEAN MAYORS TO MEET IN MAKASSAR IN SEPTEMBER 2015

The purpose of the 2nd ASEAN Mayors Forum is to discuss key policy frameworks and instruments, to facilitate knowledge sharing and mutual learning among mayors and a number of international organization working in the field of sustainable development, and to achieve stronger local governments in the ASEAN region. The forum will gather all local leaders from municipalities and towns, local government associations and other relevant partners.

2ND PREPARATORY MEETING OF HABITAT III: LOCAL GOVERNMENTS PREPARE FOR THE NEW URBAN AGENDA

THE Second Preparatory Committee (PrepCom2) of Habitat III held in Nairobi from 14 to 16 April 2015 gathered key stakeholders to prepare and discuss issues leading to the Third UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Development (Habitat III) that will take place in Quito next year. ASPAC’s region was represented by the Secretary General and the political representative, the President of the Federation of Sri Lankan Local Governments Authorities, Mayor Seyed Ali Zahir Moulana.

2015 ASIA-PACIFIC CITIES SUMMIT AND MAYORS’ FORUM IN BRISBANE, 5-8 JULY 2015
 

AN international conference on 2015 Asia-Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum will be held in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. A notification about this upcoming event has been just issued by Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Councillor Graham Quirk, and an invitation has also been sent to UCLG ASPAC.

CULTURE IN SUSTAINABLE CITIES: LEARNING WITH CULTURE 21

THE “Culture 21 Actions” toolkit providing guidance for cities aiming to evaluate, design and implement cultural policies contributing to sustainable development was adopted at the first UCLG’s Culture Summit, held in Bilbao, Spain on 18-20 March 2015 under the title “Culture and Sustainable Cities.”

DELGOSEA STANDING COMMITTEE COORDINATION MEETING

IN the second quarter of 2015, UCLG ASPAC and Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Manila, organized a Standing Committee (SC) Coordination Meeting in conjunction with the Executive Bureau Meeting and UCLG ASPAC- The European Voice of Local and Regional Authorities for Development (PLATFORMA) Seminar in Makati, the Philippines. It was the first coordination meeting of the DELGOSEA SC in 2015 to discuss the deliverables of 2014 and upcoming workplan for 2015.

INDONESIA PREPARES FOR PRE-MEETING OF HABITAT III

HABITAT III is scheduled to take place in Quito, Ecuador, in September 2016. But, preparatory efforts are already taking place among Indonesian Authorities, since President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo’s administration will host at least two serial preparatory meetings,these are the High-level Regional Preparatory Meeting to Habitat III for Asia-Pacific this October and the Third PrepCom next year.

COOPERATION WITH UN ESCAP ON WASTE-TO-ENERGY PROJECT

TWO officials from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) directly from its headwuarters in Bangkok came to visit UCLG ASPAC’s Secretariat on mid March. UN-ESCAP’s Economic Affairs Officer from the Environment and Development Division, Lorenzo Santucci, along with his  colleague Joao Aleluia, Project Coordinator, came to Indonesia to visit the cities nominated to become the host of the pilot project of UNESCAP’s Solid Waste Management initiative. These cities were Jambi, Malang City, Malang Regency and Probolinggo.
