Habitat III Conference: a Shout Out for Action


AROUND 30.000 people gathered in Quito on October 17-20, 2016. From heads of state and government, ministers to mayors or local leaders all over the world and high representatives, all met with shared vision to adopt the New Agenda for the urban living; all wrapped up in Habitat III Conference, “New Urban Agenda.” Click for more.

BOGOTA CONGRESS
Commitment from and for the World



OCTOBER 12-15, 2016, over 3,000 representatives of cities, towns, regions, and civil societies from various regions of the world gathered in the 5th UCLG Congress World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders at the City of Bogota, Colombia. They engaged in deep discussion and dialogues relating to sustainable development and the new urban agenda in the pursuance of a new sustainable era in the future. Click for more info.
 
WOMEN IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT

The IHS Urban Professional Award
 

MAYOR Tri Rismaharini said, “It is very important to develop a reliable and transparent access to information about investing in Surabaya so that foreign companies can have a clear understanding of the processes involved.” October 17, 2016, the first female Mayor of Surabaya, Indonesia, won the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies Award 2016. The award was delivered in Quito, Ecuador during the Habitat III Conference side event. The award was given to Mayor Risma in relation to the impact of her leadership in Surabaya that brought much constructive change to the development of Surabaya as a city. More importantly, it also contributes positively to Indonesia’s development and inspires future city changers. Mayor Tri believes that city’s development should not harm the living conditions of its inhabitants, and when the city supports the inhabitants, it will develop sustainably. Mayor Tri also prioritizes education. “…not just in schools, but mentality – to empower people. Students don’t just need to be smart, they need to be tough,” Mayor Tri said. Click for more info.
LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Capacitating Local Governments
 



NATIONAL League of Local Councils of the Kingdom of Cambodia (NLC) in cooperation with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) established partnerships to develop local economy in Kampong Cham and Takhmau municipalities as well as Kampong Siem through knowledge transfers of the Municipality of Chilliwack, British Columbia in Canada. This was a demonstration project in order to develop local economy in respective areas by optimizing local governments roles. The three areas were selected through a very competitive process and taken into account their potentials in tourism, business center activities, as well as various supporting services; while still facing challenges such as limited budgets, access to technical expertise, physical infrastructure and experience in decentralization reforms. Considering this, Local Economic Development (LED) Working Group was established at the three (3) local governments. Click for more info.

CULTURE
Integrating Culture in Local Planning

 



SURAKARTA, Indonesia, popularly known as a city of creativity and the heart of Javanese culture, hosted the 1st ASPAC Culture Forum. Humbly saying that while they have limitednatural resources to support its development, Surakarta is proud of its culture-based vision of development and its ability to hold more than 60 kinds of cultural events in a year and become a must-see tourist destination.Building on this, Surakarta or Solo as many people call it, has also become a founding member of the ASPAC Culture Committee established in 2015. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Connecting Cities for Better Future
 

CONNECTIVE Cities, a project initiated by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the German Association of Cities and Engagement Global gGmbH/Service Agency Communities in One World, gathered urban practitioners from Asia and Germany in the Connective Cities Practitioners’ Workshop on Sustainable Urban Mobility and Climate Change – Reducing Air Pollution by Climate-Friendly Means of Urban Transport from September 27-29, 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand. In the workshop, participants were exposed with good practices and experience from the region as well as from German municipalities; allowing an overview of solutions for sustainable urban mobility and understanding the respective success factors. Participants were also invited to present individual challenges on managing urban mobility as well as find solutions jointly in a peer-to-peer advisory session. This workshop also developed action plans for future project ideas in the respective cities of the participants. Click for more info.
LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Smart Practice for Solid Waste Management
 


DELGOSEA, one of UCLG ASPAC’s projects coordinated the knowledge transfer activity for the implementation of best practice on UCLG ASPAC’s Laos – Thailand Exchange Visit held on October 11 – 14, 2016. This activity was held responding to the needs of Laos to have proper solid waste management for their country. With the assistance of National Municipal League of Thailand, Thailand was appointed to be the destination for Laos to learn and replicate the smart practice. Three municipalities in Thailand: Nongsamrong, Phankhon, and Khonkaen were selected to be the destinations of Laos study visit. In these three municipalities, initiatives on waste management come up from governments as well as community, but always supported by the government in terms of waste management. Transparency and participation were keywords. Authorities in Thailand show how community can contribute to the efficient allocation of city budget whenever community has produced less waste, meaning less money to manage the waste.
