LCP, MEMBER OF UCLG ASPAC FACILITATED THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC SPACE IN NEW URBAN AGENDA

The two-day interactive conference on Public Space and Partnerships in the New Urban Agenda ends on a high note as city mayors led by LCP National Vice-Chairman and Balanga City Mayor Joet Garcia, Seberang Prai City Mayor Maimunah Mohd Sharif, city planners, and representatives from the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) signed the Declaration on Philippine Cities Network on Public Space at Hotel Jen in Pasay City on 28 February 2015.

AFRICA’S VOICE: THE WORLD BECOMES URBAN
 
Today, the world becomes more urban than ever. More and more people leave to make their life in cities. African countries, said UCLG AFRICA’s Secretary General Mr.  Mr. Jean-Pierre Elong Mbassi, is also experiencing this phenomena and that’s why, “More attention is needed from any local government in how to deal with the growing movement of people from villages to cities.”

One  of the attendees of the Retreat was Guillermo Tapia, Secretary General of the Latin American Federation of Cities, Municipalities and Local Governments (FLACMA).“We tried to fortify the relation with the other regions,” said Mr. Tapia. “It’s important to work closely together because we have the opportunity to more easily solve problems.

NEWS FROM THE MIDDLE EAST SECTION

Speaking about the 1st Retreat, Mr. Ihsan Ikizer from UCLG MEWA, expressed his strong appreciation that such an international forum could finally be materialized.  He added that the program was very significant to synergize all UCLG from different regions. “In order to interact intensively,” said Mr. Ikizer, “we regularly need a face to face communication, not only through email and telephone.”

NEWS FROM THE COUNCIL OF EUROPEAN MUNICIPALITIES AND REGIONS (CEMR)

Mr. Frederic Vallier from Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), European Section of UCLG, emphasized that this year is an important time for UCLG. Discussion for the Post 2015 is currently conducted, thus the network should put more effort in reshaping its strategies for a better image of the organization. He also agreed to have more collaboration between regional sections and committees to deliver more value to members. Learning the huge benefit from the retreat, he hoped that it can be frequently organized by UCLG.

MEETING WITH VICE GOVERNOR OF JAKARTA MR. DJAROT SAIFUL


UCLG ASPAC’s Secretary General Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, accompanied by the Secretariat’s staff, met the new Vice Governor of Jakarta, Mr. Djarot Saiful. The meeting took place in Jakarta City Hall on 2 February 2015 in order for the Secretariat to give updates on UCLG ASPAC’s activities.

Seenying Lau – I am a final year student at The University of Adelaide, pursuing my second degree in Development Studies with a minor in Anthropology. CSR, ITS POTENTIAL AND CHALLENGES FOR INDONESIA


My  stay in Indonesia has been extremely insightful. Through an assortment of conferences, conversations, research and work at UCLG ASPAC, I’ve begun to understand the complexity of some of the issues affecting local governance. One particular excursion to the Kota Tua (Old City) in Jakarta’s downtown area aroused my curiosity in urban development as well as how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has impacted on private-public collaborative investment in Indonesia.

MY INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE WITH UCLG ASPAC


As an aspiring anthropologist, I am trained to appreciate the importance of history, to have a sharp eye for details and to question the taken for granted. Therefore, for the purpose of this report, I cannot explain to you what I have learned during the course of my internship without first provide you with an understanding of what I came here to learn. Also, this is a very good opportunity for me to explain the idiosyncrasies which I have brought with me, both pleasant and unpleasant ones.
