Greetings, Ladies,
Summer has arrived and with it, a number of our members will be on their way to see family and friends – or else welcome visitors to our lovely Switzerland, a country many of us now call ‘home’ (acknowledging the fact that we may consider ‘home’ elsewhere too).
While some groups are taking a summer break, remember that there are still ongoing activities during the summer months to stay connected.
Our Activity Groups offered a wide range of possibilities and many of you participated with enthusiasm. Please make a note that our first gathering to welcome everyone back – and a chance to sign-up for the coming year’s Activities, (if you have not already done so), will be held on:
Friday, September 9, 10h – 12h, at the Clubhouse
La Maison de la Femme
Avenue Eglantine 6
1006 Lausanne

Our end-of-year Luncheon was enjoyed by nearly 50 happy members on a bright and sunny day at the Hotel des Trois Couronnes in Vevey. If you look on our Facebook page and Instagram – you will see lovely photographs of the event.
I will also take this opportunity to thank once more, my Co-President Gill Foyle, for our delightful partnership over the past year. While Gill has stepped down from the role, she will still be with us enjoying our Activities. We are grateful for her competent contribution to the smooth running of the Club.
Have a wonderful and memorable Summer.
À bientôt,

Dear Members,

Subject: If It Smells Fishy, it is Probably Phishing

In the last couple of weeks, the IWC has received several emails that look like they have been sent internally within our organisation, however, on closer inspection the sender’s email address does not match who they claim to be. So, with data breaches on the rise, I wanted to take the chance to remind you to stay vigilant against phishing attempts.

Hackers use fraudulent practices, email phishing, to spoof people into giving up their data. Hackers send messages that appear legitimate or look like they are from someone you trust within the IWC so that you engage with the message or click on malicious attachments.

I am afraid there is little we can do as an organisation to prevent these types of emails, as spam filters only work so far. The real trouble with this, in general, is that it erodes our trust and forces us to be suspicious, questioning ourselves because we do not want to get anything wrong and get into trouble for deleting an email that is genuine.
Our biggest defence, as individuals, is if in any doubt to simply delete the email and to consult someone else within the IWC. I must stress that if an email is unsolicited and has shock value i.e., asking for any kind of request to do something, usually reset a password, ask for a payment, etc. then please delete it and pat yourself on the back for taking that action.

Here are some tips to keep in mind so that we can protect the IWC and its data:

  • Double-check that the sender's email address matches who they claim to be
  • Do not click a link or download from someone you do not know, or were not expecting
  • Do not reply to a suspicious email or message from an email you do not recognize
  • Sometimes it is easier and better to ask someone else referenced in the email by phone or text to verify if something is true or not
  • And lastly, inform someone within the IWC so that we are aware of any potential attempts
Thank you for reading this and your continued vigilance,
Heidi Bezzant

Membership Matters corner – news, views, and welcoming new members.
To our current members who have taken advantage of the Early Bird Special, many many thanks. For those of you who have not yet paid, we very much look forward to receiving the annual fee of CHF 155 for the Club year 2022-2023,
May we kindly ask you to let us know if you are resigning (and if so why as it might help us improve), have a change of address and/or phone number. Thanks so much in advance.
We love introducing our new members with a brief bio and photo in the Club E-News. Big thanks to those who have shared with us and may we encourage more of our newcomers to send us a brief submission.

Erin moved to Lausanne from the US in December 2020 for work. While American by passport, she feels at home here in Switzerland and is enjoying her new life in Europe. She has a 7-month-old puppy named Nora who accompanies her on hikes, long walks, and weekend visits to France and Italy. When she is not working or traveling, Erin enjoys exploring Lausanne and eating at cafes, discovering new restaurants, and swimming in the lake. She hasn't met a Swiss wine she doesn't like

Hi, my name is Pat and I recently moved to Switzerland from the U.S. with my dog Tucker to live closer to my daughter, and her family, after losing both my eldest daughter and my husband to cancer.
I am a native Californian and I suppose you could say that I am a Professional Volunteer…I have a history of Volunteering at Historic Homes and Museums, both in Northern and Southern California.
In my working days, I was a small business owner, scout leader, avid crafter, and full-time Mom. I love working with people, laughing, reading, traveling, and going on wine tours. I am very social and really have a wide range of interests.
I recently turned 83, but think that I still have a lot of things to do before I am done.  I am not a French speaker but I plan on taking some classes.  I look forward to making new friends and meeting you at the IWC.

The Prize Draw!
The prize draw for 2021-2022 (for the period 1st June 2021 - 31st May 2022) took place at the Board Meeting in early June 2022.  Our lucky winner is also a new member this year, Karen Gladstone!   Angela and Karen look forward to presenting her with the bottle of bubbly very soon!

Keep thinking of friends who might like to join and perhaps you will be the lucky winner next time!
Your ideas for recruiting new members
The IWC membership has fluctuated over the years.  A few members have already told us they will not be renewing for 2022-2023 for which we thank them.
Our membership is currently standing at 255.  We would like to recruit some more members and would love to hear from you with ideas as to how best to achieve this goal.  Many of you will have worked in other associations and may have some good ideas to put forward.  Please contact us at

In order to make it easier to post on the club's Instagram account, Kanika has put together a guide for this as well. To access this please click here

All log-in details for the IWC Facebook page and the IWC webpage can be found in the IWC Guidebook for 2021-2022.

For the club year 2022-2023, our librarian Leng will be delighted to welcome you
either at a mutually convenient time (to be fixed via our email address),
or the third Wednesday of the month at 2-4 pm (kindly confirm beforehand)

Some Guidance on Book Donations:

Thanks to the generous book donations of members past and present our library can now boast an enthralling collection of books, with themes ranging from the classics to the romantic, historical, crime/thriller, and sci-fi.

Not least, you can find Latin American and contemporary Asian authors waiting to bring you on interesting literary journeys, all nestling on our shelves.

However, as for the shelves, whatever enticing subjects they may contain, they are not extensible. This is why I would like to inform club members that we can only accept, from now on,  paperbacks and not hardcover volumes, such as reference books, self-help volumes, and biographies on subjects not especially currently relevant.
Opening times: Every THIRD Wednesday of the month, from 2-4 pm.

                                 Open to all interested members
                                                                        Dear Club Members,
It has recently come to our attention again that while there are a plethora of activities available during the week – very little is on offer for those members who search for Weekend Activities.
What we propose is that you come up with ideas and implement them yourselves under the umbrella of a new activity group entitled “Weekend Activity Group”. We suggest you consider:
A walk/hike on a Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon.
A lunch get-together either day.
An evening dinner at a restaurant on Friday also.
A cultural activity such as a small concert in a church, or an outing to a jazz festival.
Or just about anything else where you can exchange friendship, company, and ideas.
This is open to everyone who is keen to join other members on a weekend. Some of you cannot participate during the week because of work commitments, while some of you simply want to have more FUN! – Now is the time to RESPOND!
While one person will need to take the lead – this can be a flexible group effort.
Please send an email to:

We’d love to show you Bern’s old town and Switzerland’s Federal Parliament

In the morning we will have 60 minutes guided tour of the Swiss Parliament Building, find out about the history of the building, how Parliament works, and visit the domed hall, the Council chambers, and the lobby.

After lunch, we will take a guided tour through the famous Zytglogge clock tower. The Zytglogge is Bern's most recognizable and oldest monument. It houses a 15th-century astronomical clock, and its glockenspiel is a major tourist attraction. (

The guided tour in English (1 hour ) of the Swiss Parliament Building is free. The tour starts at 10.30, but we must be there at 10.00 for the security check. Please read important information on security checks, identity papers, and access here

After lunch, we will have a guided tour in English (1 hour) through the Zytglogge clock tower which costs CHF 250.00 for a maximum of 15 people. The tour starts at 14.15.

Between the two events, we plan a walk along the Lauben (arcades) to the Bern bear park and to the lower part of Bern by the Aare river with lunch at a restaurant followed by a ride on the Marzili funicular back up to the center in time for the tour of the Zytglogge.

We will meet at the Swiss Parliament in Bern at 10.00 am on August 10

Pickleball coming in September! Plan to be a part of the action!

A small group of IWC members who are interested in learning to play pickleball has formed and this exciting new group will officially launch in September. Pickleball is said to be the fastest-growing team sport in the US…mainly because it’s an ideal sport for older players, not too rigorous, easy to learn, and a fun and social game to play.

We will play pickleball in Vevey where the badminton group plays, as pickleball is played on a badminton-size court.

Check Youtube for many pickleball videos to see if you might want to give it a try.

No need to sign up yet… you can do that at the September activity fair at the clubhouse.

The Vevey Badminton will keep playing as usual through July and August

Bonjour! Comment allez-vous?
