The Merry Month of May is now upon us and many of us have been enjoying the vagaries of Spring in Switzerland with abundant Spring flowers to be admired lakeside and at a slower but enchanting pace – up in the mountains too. Others have ventured outside of the country during the Easter period and have been enjoying a second round of viewing forsythia and other Spring delights that appear later in the season elsewhere.
Time now to get to our IWC news!
VICE PRESIDENT
While we will certainly miss Lynn Denton who so skilfully fulfilled her role as Vice-President of the IWC over the last two years, we are delighted to welcome Shelly Winzeler to our Board. Thank you to everyone who voted! And thank you to Lynn.
SECRETARY
We have appreciated Mary Foley (and her warm sense of humour) in her role as Secretary over the past two years but now we need A MEMBER TO STEP FORWARD and take over this position and join the Executive Team, as the two-year mandate has now been fulfilled.
MONTHLY MEETING
It really is a time of transition right now. We will soon be bidding farewell to Lidy Lakerveld who has provided us with a lively and interesting monthly roster of guests and interviews. Beverly Grahame has kindly offered to take over this activity for us.
And on the topic of Monthly Meetings – after undertaking considerable effort and coordination, Lidy organized a very special meeting on April 26 when we had a zoom meeting with:
Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, former CEO of Nestlé spoke about the motivation behind his book “Ascensions” which dealt with the rise of his career and of course, the positive subsequent developments for Nestlé itself. A wide range of topics was discussed ranging from his personal history with the organisation to ongoing pertinent subjects that included water-management issues and future developments in the business world.
GUIDEBOOK FOR THE COMING YEAR
And it is also THAT time again when we will be gathering information to put into our Guidebook for 2022-2023. An important area is of course – photographs, so if you have photographs of an activity you took part in and would love to share them – make sure they are good quality 300dpi and send them to us via the Presidents email: president@iwc-lausanne.orgwith the title – Photo Submission Guidebook 2023
NEW MEMBERS
We are pleased to welcome three new members this past month. Jan Anderson, Trish Akens, and Florence Brandi.
We hope that you will find lots to enjoy with our Club!
And join in as Volunteers where you can.
And there you have it!
Enjoy this bountiful month of beauty.

“Ascensions” from snowy mountains to the management of Nestle, conquering heights.
Last Tuesday, April 26th, 2022, we had an inspiring talk on the IWC Zoom with Ex-CEO of Nestle Mr. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe about his book “Ascensions”.
We were very happy and excited that around 30 people took the time to be at this Zoom meeting; it was amazing that Mr. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe spent more than 1,5 hours with the IWC.
Our own IWC legal officer, Mr. Sasha Kemball, took the initiative last year to translate the book “Ascensions”, from French to English.
I would like to thank Linda Richards for helping me during the Zoom Event and also to give a short summary of the book. I would also like to thank Isabelle Wagon, who suggested trying to invite Mr. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe to talk about his book and about Nestle. Most of our IWC members are living and working in the Morges-Lausanne-Montreux area and Nestle is a big and important employer in the area!
Note:
The French version of the book “Ascensions” can be bought in every bookstore or online in the Canton of Vaud; however, the English version is only available at the business schoolSan Telmo in Sevilla in Spain. Their website is www.santelmo.org and their email address is informacion@santelmo.org
** (The Spanish version is also available at San Telmo)!
(During the Zoom Event Gill Foyle, IWC Co-president, suggested that perhaps she could donate her copy of the book to the IWC library so more people may read the English version).
The Zoom Event with Mr. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe was recorded and if you would like to watch the recording please log onto:

The April Monthly Meeting was the last (Zoom) Event that I set up/organized/hosted for the IWC.
It has been a pleasure to set up/organize/host so many (Zoom) Events for the last 1,5 years for the IWC. I have always tried to look for subjects and events that might be interesting for our members coming from all around the world and living in such a beautiful and peaceful country as Switzerland, more specifically the Canton of Vaud.
Looking forward to meeting and talking to you in all kinds of different activities organized by amazing IWC volunteers!
Lidy Lakerveld
IWC Events coordinator.
Our volunteers' lunch will take place on Tuesday 17th May at the clubhouse. Please let us know if you can attend.
SAVE THE DATE!
IWC SUMMER EVENT FRIDAY 10th JUNE 2022
Our final event in this year's calendar is our Ladies Lunch to be held at Hotel des Trois Couronnes in Vevey. We will be sending a special newsletter to all members later this month with details of how to sign up to attend this fantastic event.
Subject: If It Smells Fishy, it is Probably Phishing
In the last couple of weeks, the IWC has received several emails that look like they have been sent internally within our organisation, however, on closer inspection the sender’s email address does not match who they claim to be. So, with data breaches on the rise, I wanted to take the chance to remind you to stay vigilant against phishing attempts.
Hackers use fraudulent practices, email phishing, to spoof people into giving up their data. Hackers send messages that appear legitimate or look like they are from someone you trust within the IWC so that you engage with the message or click on malicious attachments.
I am afraid there is little we can do as an organisation to prevent these types of emails, as spam filters only work so far. The real trouble with this, in general, is that it erodes our trust and forces us to be suspicious, questioning ourselves because we do not want to get anything wrong and get into trouble for deleting an email that is genuine.
Our biggest defence, as individuals, is if in any doubt to simply delete the email and to consult someone else within the IWC. I must stress that if an email is unsolicited and has shock value i.e., asking for any kind of request to do something, usually reset a password, ask for a payment, etc. then please delete it and pat yourself on the back for taking that action.
Here are some tips to keep in mind so that we can protect the IWC and its data:
Double-check that the sender's email address matches who they claim to be
Do not click a link or download from someone you do not know, or were not expecting
Do not reply to a suspicious email or message from an email you do not recognize
Sometimes it is easier and better to ask someone else referenced in the email by phone or text to verify if something is true or not
And lastly, inform someone within the IWC so that we are aware of any potential attempts
Thank you for reading this and your continued vigilance,
Heidi Bezzant

Your ideas for recruiting new members
The IWC membership has fluctuated over the years. For the 2020/2021 club year, we finished the year with 248 members. A few members have already told us they will not be renewing for 2022-2023 for which we thank them.
Our membership is currently standing at 246. We would like to recruit some more members and we would love to hear from you with your ideas as to how best to achieve this goal. Many of you will have worked in other associations and may have some good ideas to put forward. Please contact us at membership@iwc-lausanne.org

IWC LIBRARY NEWS!!
For the club year 2021-2022, our librarian Leng will be delighted to welcome you either at a mutually convenient time (to be fixed via our email address), or the traditional first Wednesday of the month at 2-4 pm (kindly confirm beforehand)
Leng is looking for an IWC member interested in books about different topics to be a co-librarian.
Some Guidance on Book Donations
Thanks to the generous book donations of members past and present our library can now boast an enthralling collection of books, with themes ranging from the classics to the romantic, historical, crime/thriller, sci-fi.
Not least, you can find Latin American and contemporary Asian authors waiting to bring you on interesting literary journeys, all nestling on our shelves.
However, as for the shelves, whatever enticing subjects they may contain, they are not extensible. This is why I would like to inform club members that we can only accept, from now on, paperbacks and not hardcover volumes, such as reference books, self-help volumes, biographies on subjects not especially currently relevant.
"Leng is looking for an IWC member interested in books about different topics to be a co-librarian.
Opening times: Every THIRD Wednesday of the month, from 2-4pm. »
It is with great pleasure that I will introduce you to the family Gaillard Wine Domaine in Epesses in the Lavauxregion.
This estate is located in the heart of the Lavaux vineyards on Lake Geneva (Lac Léman). Since 2007 under the mention of "Lavaux, vineyard terraces" it has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The Gaillard family has been present in Epeesses for four generations. When you cross the terraces of the Lavaux vineyards between Lausanne and Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva, you pass through typical villages that bloom with the seasons. The estate is at the top of the vineyards facing the lake.
In 1989, the domain was developed in the south of the southern Rhône by the acquisition of "Château de Farel", supplier of the Pope when he was staying in Avignon. Unfortunately following the death of Pierre Gaillard on January 20, 2018, they decided to sell it on July 25th, 2020 to their neighbour and winemaker friend Oliver Rigal.
Domaine Gaillard continues to collaborate with him and they remain the only Swiss supplier of the Château de Farel brand. For more information click on the link:
Dear Club Members,
It has recently come to our attention again that while there are a plethora of activities available during the week – very little is on offer for those members who search for Weekend Activities.
What we propose is that you come up with ideas and implement them yourselves under the umbrella of a new activity group entitled “Weekend Activity Group”. We suggest you consider:
A walk/hike on a Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon.
A lunch get-together either day.
An evening dinner at a restaurant on Friday also.
A cultural activity such as a small concert in a church, an outing to a jazz festival.
Or just about anything else where you can exchange friendship, company, and ideas.
This is open to everyone who is keen to join other members on a weekend. Some of you cannot participate during the week because of work commitments, while some of you simply want to have more FUN! – Now is the time to RESPOND!
While one person will need to take the lead – this can be a flexible group effort.
WILL YOU TAKE ON THE ROLE?
The Pully tennis club restaurant offers a beautiful view from its terrace, a cosy atmosphere, and simple but much-appreciated cuisine with relatively few but varied dishes. Hopefully, we’ll be lucky with the weather and can sit outdoors.
Limited parking by the restaurant, a large parking lot a short distance away, and bus Nr 49 stop Centre Sportif Rochettaz.
**Strict Maximum of 12 for the reservation.
**Pleasersvp on Friday 27th May latest
**To ease payment of the bill at the end, each person will be responsible for paying for what they order
This was one of the most difficult groups to restart after covid restrictions but thanks to our enthusiastic leader Gill we are finally now singing as a group again.
Come and join us for an enthusiastic singalong - no previous experience needed!

La Belle Epoque de l’Art Nouveau au temps de Bonnard et Mucha
The Belle Époque of Art Nouveau presents, through a selection of works from a prestigious private Swiss collection, several aspects of a major artistic movement that shaped the face of Europe between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
Between the end of the 19th century and the First World War, Europe experienced years of peace that favored economic prosperity as well as the development of numerous scientific and human advances. Artists participated in the revival of society, in Paris of course, but also in Vienna, Munich, and Brussels. Born of the upheavals produced by the industrial revolutions, Art Nouveau rejects the forms of the past and challenges classical culture by proposing a new way of perceiving and feeling the world in the beauty and unity of art and life.
Far from being limited to aesthetic and formal changes, Art Nouveau is thought of as a cultural and social phenomenon, an innovative artistic movement that marked the entry into the 20th century. In search of reform of society through the beauty of objects accessible to all, it is widely distributed thanks to posters, magazines, and prints.
From Jules Chéret to Edvard Munch, via Pierre Bonnard, Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoschka, many artists participated in the creativity of this revolution.
