Hurricane Kitten Hits Adoption Centre!

If you have visited our adoption centre recently, you will have noticed that we are awash with very tiny kittens.  In fact, we currently have over 75 kittens in care, and more blow in every day.  The little ones to the right were rescued during a recent TNR operation, and are doing well in foster care.

As you can imagine, such a deluge of kittens arriving all at once has put a huge strain on our resources.  Kittens and moms with kittens now occupy every possible space in our isolation room, and are flooding out in to the hallway and front retail space.  Our foster options are full to capacity.  This perfect storm shows no sign of ending any time soon.

Short of trucking in sandbags and building a dike around the centre, we are out of ideas as to how we can stem this rising tide of babies.  The grim reality is that if we have to turn them away, most of them will die.  Also grimly true is the fact that if we take in too many, the ones already at our adoption centre will start to get stress induced illnesses.

The only answer is expansion of our foster program.  We urgently need at least a dozen new foster homes that can take on a mom and babies or orphan kittens.  We also need at least two more experienced neo-natal foster homes (bottle babies), and another four or five willing to learn how to care for neo-nates.

If you can foster please email  If you know someone who might be interested, please forward this newsletter to them!

Foster Focus:  Delta's 6 Singing Sons

Say hello to Delta and her 6 singing sons, who are being lovingly cared for by a Craig Street Cats foster family.

Delta comes from one of our managed colonies, and gave birth to her 6 handsome boys at our adoption centre.  The whole family has been taken in by one of our amazing foster families.  The boys are doing very well, and the family will be available for adoption some time in July.

Happy Birthday to Us!

Wow!  Our adoption centre has been open for 2 whole years!  It's been an amazing journey and we will be celebrating with a 2 day birthday party and kitten baby shower.  Please consider this your invitation to the party, May 24 and 25, 1 to 4 pm.  The weekend promises to be lovely, and we'll have the barbecue going from 1 to 4 both days.  Of course we'll have a bake sale, and lots of interesting goodies available.

The Kitten Baby Shower is Sunday, May 25, from 2 to 4 pm.  We'll be serving cake and ice cream for our guests.  The Kitten Gift Registry is:

KMR kitten formula powder
canned kitten food (PetValu Performatrin Kitten preferred)
dry kitten food (high quality preferred)
Royal Canin Mother and Babycat dry food
digital kitchen scales
digital ear thermometers
probe covers for ear thermometers
pedialite unflavored
Polysporin eye ointment
Polysporin eye drops

Whisker Walk for Craig Street Cats

The first Sunday in June is coming up quickly!  Have you registered for our Whisker Walk yet?  This is probably our most important spring event, as it helps to make sure we have funds on hand during the summer, which is our time of highest need.  Summer is also the most difficult time of year for fundraising, because so many people are away on vacation or staying at their cottages.

Registration is easy.  Just follow this link for complete information about the event, and how you can register.  If you can't walk, please make a pledge on line, or drop into our adoption centre to pledge via cash or cheque.  We promise to make every dollar count.

Craig Street Cats - Volunteer Spotlight

Volunteers are the backbone of Craig Street Cats and we love them dearly!

We'd like to introduce Leah P., who has been volunteering with CSC for over 2 years.  Leah first heard about CSC from a friend who volunteered here, and thought she should give it a try.
Here's some Q & A with Leah:
Q. What sort of volunteering do you do with Craig Street Cats?
A. I come in 2 or more times per week, and do just about everything, except give medications.  I've helped with cage cleaning, feed, washing dishes and floors, socializing cats and kittens, fundraising events, adoptions -- just about everything.

Q. What's the best part of volunteering with Craig Street Cats?
A. Interacting with all the cats and meeting new people.

If you are interested in volunteering at Craig Street Cats, we'd love to hear from you! We need all types of volunteers and you can commit to regular shifts or volunteer as your schedule permits. Submit your application online today by heading to Craig Street Cats - Volunteers.

As many of you already know, our own Tobias Tuxington is running for mayor.  He has taken a stand against all forms of neglect, and has challenged his fellow candidates to take his Pledge of Compassion and Action.  Tobias first campaign event is scheduled for June 26th at the Viscount Gort Hotel.  Details will be posted on his website and facebook page.  You can also follow Tobias on Twitter.
