February Edition:

Love is the Answer

NAHS Founder, Ms. Judy Gray
While February is the shortest month of the year, it represents the most important emotion in our lives. Of course, that would be LOVE! February 14th is Valentine’s Day, a day to give those you care about a beautiful card, a thoughtful gift, or a heartfelt “thank you for being you” and a hug.

Love is priceless, and it is the most sought-after feeling throughout the world. Actually, love can save lives. While working in hospitals, I’ve seen dying patients revived through the power of love. Home and family represent love for most people. Giving freely to help those in need is another way to demonstrate love for mankind. Yes, love is the gift that heals the heart when all else fails.

It is said that the heart is the seat of the soul, and February is also American Heart Month. Love is certainly the best emotional medicine for the heart and the rest of the body. Cancers have disappeared, when people found the love of their lives. When you are suffering and depressed, the first question should be who or what hurt your heart? Many times, heart attacks happen after worry and mental trauma tax the heart. Our bodies are chemical factories that can help heal us or overload the system with “natural substances” that are life-threatening like LDL cholesterol, for example. That’s why a healthy heart requires a peaceful spirit and a happy mind.

Further, we need to protect the body that harbors the precious individual energy that makes each of us unique. Our minds must be focused on productivity and positivity. This makes the body physically stronger and is proven with kinesiology. Daily exercise appropriate to age and abilities is also a must, along with daily exposure to sunshine or its equivalent. Lastly, but of major importance, food and supplements are life-changing. Yet, even they can be for better or for worse. As far as food choices are concerned, there are many opinions. However, there are some definite rules for everyone. Food should be as fresh as possible, raw whenever possible, organic or free of chemicals and poisons, and nutritionally sound and complete with as much nutrient availability as possible. Much of what is commonly consumed today is lacking, particularly in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and even complete proteins plus cofactors for proper digestion. Literally, too many people are just interested in stopping the hunger pangs rather than realizing the food/supplements ingested are the fuel for energy and materials for repair and replacement of dead and dying cells. How much more important can this be?

Now, let’s examine the need for productivity and positivity mentioned above. We all have a purpose. Whether we pursue that purpose is determined by our own choices. It's not particularly easy to get off the couch and step into the unknown. Nevertheless, the rewards are amazing when purpose and positivity combined with passion fulfill a destiny. This is so much better than being remorseful about what could have been at any stage of life.  Making the most of each day is an admirable goal on which to focus.  Yet filling each day with kindness goodness and love is the ultimate achievement.  This is what we must always strive for during these tumultuous times.  Love truly is the answer.

Obituary and Tribute for Bill Gray

The Hero of North American Herb & Spice

A lifetime on this planet passes swiftly by.  Far more swiftly than we are prepared for, in most cases.  Bill Gray was my quiet hero.  Never did you have to doubt or wonder if he would carry out any task no matter how big or small.  With a work ethic that never wavered, he was always preparing for the next mission and making sure it was done right.  He believed in leading by example whether it was a small task or a momentous one.  He was there to see it through.  One of his greatest joys was to share his wisdom with young and old alike.

I know he made a difference in lives for the better.  He gave to scores of charities every year and had just finished sending his annual contributions for this year.  He cared for others and loved that we could help people, animals, and our planet.  His generosity was amazing.  He loved the Tiger Sanctuary and our contribution that helped to save these endangered animals.  It was a joy for him to help us make life better for over 70 orphans in Uganda.  Together, we have helped with building a school, purchasing farmland, and ongoing contributions to help keep all activities going for these children in need.

Bill Gray may have seemed rough and tough on the exterior to some, but his heart was as big as the moon.  I know he’s in the light, and it’s a better place for having his beautiful spirit.  I just wasn’t ready to let him go.

With Love,

Ms. Judy Gray

“The ability to take a whole food supplement was really exciting to me, I am grateful North American Herb and Spice strives to have the best, and most bioavailable products! Their Purely-B was a must add to support my metabolism this winter.”

"I really love the bone activ as a way to help support my joints and make sure that I’m getting all the help my body needs. It contains MCHC which is raw bone powder from grass fed cows, plus an herb blend of wild oregano, sage, and rosemary, all of which not only help support healthy bone density so that I can age well with my active lifestyle and continue to feel good throughout my life, but also includes the many endless benefits that you get from these amazing wild herbs. I drink plenty of raw milk, but this potent blend of naturally calcium rich ingredients is very important for those who may need extra support with their joint and bone health."

Heart Awareness
Ingredient Spotlight

Written by:
Steven Harkins, Director of Education

February is American Heart Month – a time when our nation spotlights heart disease, which is still the number 1 killer of Americans today. President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first proclamation in 1964, seeking to kindle awareness after suffering from a heart attack himself. Since then, U.S. presidents have declared February American Heart Month annually.

This issue has not vanished, it is more prevalent in our society than ever before. Over the last 2 pandemic years, more people have engaged in unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, such as eating poorly, drinking more alcohol, and limiting physical activity through quarantine, habits that can contribute to heart disease. “Heart disease continues to be the greatest health threat to Americans and is still the leading cause of death worldwide,” according to the AHA's Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics 2021 update.

There is a silver lining.  In the majority of cases, heart disease is preventable when people adopt a healthy lifestyle, which includes not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, managing blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, controlling high blood pressure, and engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week. In addition, practicing a disciplined eating and drinking regimen full of healthy nutrient-rich superfoods, herbs, and spices is another key habit that can make all the difference for our bodies and cardiovascular system at large.

Now, as we are witnessing a rise in heart muscle and outer heart lining inflammation occurring from conditions such as myocarditis and pericarditis, there has never been a more important time to get serious about our heart health. North American Herb & Spice provides the highest caliber of heart products with premium ingredients that you can trust to nourish you and keep you in the game.  Learn more about our starting line-up below!

Black Seed Oil- The shape of this mighty seed is of a tiny heart; an indicator of its proper usage!  Studies have found that black seed supports a healthy heart rate, blood pressure, circulation, heart muscle, and cholesterol response. This is due to its rich essential fatty acid and plant sterol content. Thymoquinone, an active ingredient, can also help protect the heart from oxidative damage, according to published research. Black seed also supports a healthy response to inflammation. Take this by the teaspoon or in a softgel form if you want the benefits without the taste.

Pomegranate- This is perhaps the biggest #1 heart healthy fruit on the planet! Delicious pomegranate contains more antioxidants than most other fruits, which are valuable for their support of a healthy response to oxidative stress.  It also supports a healthy blood pressure response and balance. That isn’t all. Pomegranate has unique compounds like punicalagin and ellagic acid that support healthy arteries!  Maintaining clean, low plaque arteries is a key step towards optimal circulation and proper heart function.

Muscadine Grape- Muscadines are dark colored grapes abundant in two key heart nourishing antioxidants, Ellagic acid and Resveratrol.  You may be surprised to learn that Resveratrol is the #1 antioxidant for heart health.  And guess what?  Muscadine grapes contain the highest amounts of this powerful antioxidant found anywhere in nature! In fact, this superfood has over 40x the “repair and protect” antioxidants of regular grape varieties.  It is another formidable ally in supporting a healthy blood pressure and cholesterol response.

Wild-Caught Alaskan Sockeye Salmon- Finding a clean source of salmon was the hard part; it took us 16 years to find this one!  At NAHS we vet the quality and accept nothing less than the purity you deserve. The nutrient profile of this mighty fish is off the charts. Real vitamin A, B vitamins, D, and the full omega essential fatty acid spectrum, It also offers us the most potent antioxidant of the sea, called “Astaxanthin”, also responsible for the pink reddish color you see in salmon.  Studies show that the omega-3s in salmon oil support healthy triglyceride levels. High levels of triglycerides, a type of fat in your blood, are a risk factor for heart disease and stroke.  This wild caught fish promotes healthy blood flow and supports a healthy response to inflammation.  It is a must have!

HibiscusHave you ever tried a cold Hibiscus tea before?  If you have been so lucky, you know it is one of the most crisp and refreshing teas you can possibly try.  The leaves of this plant are dried and deliver a tart, berry-like flavor. It is rich in a class of compounds known as anthocyanins, (responsible for its dark red color).  This botanical is our top pick for supporting a healthy blood pressure response, and our customers love the results they are seeing, while enjoying cups daily. Hibiscus also supports a healthy, natural blood flow. This is critical to maintain proper heart function.

    • 200,000 happen to people who have already had a heart attack.
    • About 1 in 5 heart attacks are silent—the damage is done, but the person is not aware of it.

According to the American Heart Association website, here are a few more details you may want to know:
  • From 2015 to 2018 in the United States, 58.8% of non-Hispanic (NH) Black females and 60.1% of NH Black males had some form of CVD. This race category had the highest prevalence of CVD.
  • In 2019 in the United States, coronary heart disease (CHD) was the leading cause (41.3%) of deaths attributable to CVD in the United States, followed by other CVD (17.3%), stroke (17.2%), high blood pressure (11.7%), heart failure (9.9%), diseases of the arteries (2.8%).

Houdini’s Hearty Health Hacks

Houdini's Health Hacks
Hello again, all my friends!  It’s been a while, but I am back to give you more health tips. I have been very concerned recently about the rise of heart issues happening to humans everywhere. Cardiovascular disease is the number 1 cause of death around the world, and this is a health crisis to be sure. Although I am a cat, I have sat in many meetings at North American Herb & Spice and my owner has given me an education on everything wholesome for the body since birth!  I want to tell you how to preserve, protect, and keep your heart ticking with practical superfoods and habits you can do right away.

Take it from me, an active lifestyle does the heart good!  You should always invest in your playtime, at least 20-30 minutes on average per day, to exercise your heart. What is your favorite activity?  Perhaps a sport you enjoy?  I personally love to play with different humans and test my reflexes. I always win of course. I have a few toys that keep me busy, and prioritize my runs around the office, at home, and down any hallway available. I know how busy you humans can be, but if you really want to keep yourself going over the years, put your heart first and stay active!

Now for the diet. Did you know there are some incredibly heart-healthy superfoods out there that support your healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, circulation, heart rhythm, and muscles?  The potent levels of antioxidants in these particular foods also help support the oxidative stress of your organs, like the heart!  Stress is no good and you must be intentional about keeping it under control.

Super Foods to the Rescue!

Complete Wholefood Vitamin E - If its not complete, I can’t recommend it to you!  NAHS combines superfoods like sunflower seeds, Austrian pumpkin seeds, and red palm oil– Rich in all 8 vitamin E nutrients:  Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Gamma tocotrienols and tocopherols.  This simply means you are getting everything and this is the most absorbable way to take this essential, heart-healthy vitamin.  E is a powerful antioxidant that supports the protection of the heart from oxidative damage, according to numerous published studies. We offer drops and capsules here:
https://www.northamericanherbandspice.com/shop/purely-e-capsules/

Mediterranean Red Sour Grapes - Made from sun-dried, red, high-mountain immature grapes, these are denser in grape active ingredients, such as ellagic acid and resveratrol than ripe grape extracts. This is why it’s ideal for supporting a healthy heart & circulatory response and also healthy detoxification. Plus, it’s filled with sour acids, like malic acid and tartaric acid, which support healthy blood vessels and cholesterol levels. Enjoy as a superfood powder in your smoothie, or take convenient capsules to fortify your heart!
https://www.northamericanherbandspice.com/shop/resvital-capsules/

Oxygen-rich Oregano with Pomegranate and Muscadine Syrup - Oh yes!  I know first hand the benefits.  This is the type of oregano that is water-soluble, and full of life-giving oxygen, it goes just as easy in your water as it does in mine.  Here is the scoop about what these 3 super ingredients share in common:  They support healthy blood flow, balanced cholesterol levels, a normal blood pressure response, and… They lend powerful antioxidants to support your heart tissue and stress levels. 1 tablespoon to an ounce per day and don’t delay!
https://www.northamericanherbandspice.com/shop/oreganol-p-73-juice-with-real-pomegranate-grape/

Hawthorne Berry, Rosemary, and Hibiscus - Fortunately for you, NAHS puts these formulas together, and saves you the extra time and money.  They are some of the smartest human beings around!  Hawthorne is the #1 heart-healthy berry.  Hawthorne teams up with hibiscus to support healthy blood pressure. For hundreds of years, people have used this berry as an herbal remedy to support the digestive and cardiovascular systems. In fact, the berry has been a key part of traditional Chinese medicine since at least 659 A.D!  Hawthorne and Rosemary team up to support a healthy response to inflammation. This unique herbal blend is called Hyper-eez.  Get the capsules here:
